Lancaster Co. 4-H reviews past year’s By JOANNE SPAHR LANCASTER - After a full year of joys, struggles, and fulfillments, it is many times good for the soul to look back and recount the highlights of time past. Last Thursday evening Lancaster County Red Rose Beef and Sheep Club members and their parents did just that at their annual Winter banquet held at the Farm and Home Center, JAncaster. This year’s top beef award winner was Brett Holzhauer, Holtwood Rl. This 14-year old had the distinction of showing his Chiamna Angus crossbred “Snowball” to the championship of the 1978 Pennsylvania Farm Show, for which he earned a $7,687 check as a ‘bookmark’ in his 4-H record book. For this honor, Frey Brothers Manufacturing, Quarryville, who sold the 4-H’er his club calf, honored him with an electric clock. Agway, Inc., of Lancaster awarded him a pen set for showing one animal of the grand cham pion beef trio at that January agricultural show. The two other members of the grand champion trio were Tim Hess, Lancaster R 2, and Fritz Frey, Quar ryville, who earned pen sets from Agway for their two heavyweight contributions to the winning trio. Prior to earning his honor, Hess had also been recogniz ed for showing the county champion at the Lancaster round-up on “that rainy day” in November. At this show the Lancaster cham pion is chosen regardless of the outcome at Farm Show. In a different vein from the other awards presented, .1C Snavely & Sons, Landisville, presented Hess a color wall mount photo of the grand champion. Also honoring the county champion was Sperry New Holland, New Holland who gave the 4-H’er a wrist watch. Following the county show,' young Hess’s beef went on to be named the heavyweight champion of the Farm Show Junior Beef Show. This year’s reserve county champion was shown by Dora Jo Geib, Manheim R 5, who received a silver bowl from Farm Credit Associa tion, Lancaster. The fmal awards in the beef division went to the showmanship champions. Samuel Long, Peach Bot tom, earned a silver trophy for his outstanding per formance at the county roun dup and Kenneth Brubaker, 2418 Harrisburg Pike, Lan caster, earned the same type trophy for taking the cham pion beef showman title at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in this, his last year of 4-H work. Grubb Supply, Elizabethtown, supplied both trophies. In the lamb and sheep divi sion, two outstanding club members, Sarah Brubaker, Lancaster, and Wayne Hess, Conestoga Rl, were recognized, Miss Brubaker, the sister to Kenneth, earned a trophy from Wenger’s Mill, Rheems, for her county champion pair and grand champion single lamb. At Farm Show the lady showed reserve champion junior market lamb and reserve champion Hampshire Hess’s trophy presented by West Willow Farmers’ Association, West Willow, was given to him for taking the grand champion sheep showman title in the junior sheep division at the Penn sylvania Farm Show beef club triumphs Sarah Brubaker and Wayne Hess earned top honors for excellence in the sheep project at the annual banquet of the Red Rose 4-H Beef and Sheep Club. The county Pennsylvania Livestock Judging team members Sarah Brubaker, Samuel Long, Debra Car mean, East Petersburg; and Judy Zimmerman, Ephrata Rl, each received $2O as part of their winnings for the 1978 judging season. They also were given a rotating plaque presented by the Penn sylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association. Midst the many awards of appreciation bestowed on the leaders by the 4-H’ers, the club presented County Extension Director Max M. Smith with a paintmg for 41 years of service to the club In accepting his gift, painted by local artist Anne Rohrer, Quarryville, Smith said, “I still get the same satisfac tion by helping boys and girls in the county as I did 40 years ago. It’s wonderful to work with the 4-H beef club ” Other adult leaders receiv ed gift certificates to Willow Valley Restaurant. The evening ended with a song composed by Kenneth Brubaker, the club’s presi dent.
