Omaha Cattle February 2,1978 CATTLE: Compared with the previous week’s close. Closing prices on slaughter steers were unevenly firm to 50c higher, and heifers closed 25-50 c higher. Cows were firm to 50c higher, and bulls firm, instances 50-1.00 higher. Four day receipts 13,000 as compared 14,100 previous week and 12,300 a year ago. Weather was a dominating factor in the livestock trade during the week under review. Paralyzing snow storms in the mideast and eastern sections of the country virtually halted movement of carcass beef into eastern terminals for a time, and the resulting shortage of rolling stock slowed kill rates early. Local slaughter supplies were still of modest proportions, but the overall finish was not particularly attractive most days. There was a predominance of good to average - choice and a modest showing choice and prime. Slaughter steers made up approximately 40 per cent and heifers 39 per cent. Cows comprised 11 per cent and feeders 8 per cent. STEERS: Three loads Research has confirmed that less competition at the feed trough is one key to more eggs and more net profit.
