The Quaker Stove is built to en

bent body is made from a heavy plate steel. The
top surface is of a 5/16” plate steel. The S-shaped con
struction of the interior allows the logs to burn efficiently
from one end to the other like a cigar.

is especially helpful in areas
where the Dutch elm disease
is just starting to be a
problem, reports Dr. Roland
R. Daniels of the
Agricultural Experiment
Station at University Park.
All trees newly infected
with Dutch elm disease
should be cut and either
burned or peeled before
spring comes, Daniels says.
“Even stumps from frshly
cut elms should be peeled to
a few inches below ground
level. Any unpeeled bran
ches larger than one-half
inch diameter may shelter
beetles.”
The Penn Stater adds that
tree limbs or trunks saved
for firewood should be
completely peeled, and all
remaining branches should
be burned. They indicated
the fungus causing the
disease is carried from tree
to tree by either of two
beetles, the European elm
bark beetle or the native elm
bark beetle. The disease has
all but eliminated the
American elm in many
eastern and mid-western
states and has now spread to
California.
The beetle population and
the threat o f spread may be
reduced by pruning all dead
or weakened branches on
non-diseased trees, they
added. They pointed out that
elm bark beetles will not
infest wood with loose,
cracked bark such as occurs
in old logs or trees dead

more than a year. Old dead
trees or old logs have long
smce lost their brood of
beetles.
“Spraying to control the
elm bark beetles is generally
impractical and costly,” Dr.
Daniels pointed out.
“Spraying to protect trees
against the Dutch elm
disease can be justified only
for a few, very highly-valued
trees,” he affirmed.
“No spraying program
should take place unless
sanitation and removal of
beetle breeding sites also are
carried out. To date,
systemic insecticides have
not proved entirely
satisfactory in protecting
trees.”
Research to improve the
use of systemic fungicides is
underway, it was stated.
Simplified and more ef
fective methods of applying
sprays are being examined.
High pressure injection
systems are on the market,
but their use has not been
approved by the En
vironmental Protection
Agency.
Some elm species resist
the Dutch elm disease, it was
noted. However, these
species are smaller than the
American elm and lack the
typical vaseshaped form of
this tree. Resistant species
are the Siberian elm and the
Chinese elm.
Also resistant is a
Netherlands elm selection,
the Christine Buisman elm.

LEBANON - Whenever
water from rainstorms runs
from farm fields the farmer
is losing ground water

cording to Afton Schadel,
Soil Resources Chief of the
Pa. Department of En
vironmental Resources.
While the department is
primarily concerned with
the water pollution caused
by soils and soil borne
materials, the losses to the
farmer have occurred long
before the runoff has caused
stream turbidity and
sediment pollution.
Schadel said the
techniques of raising crops
are well known by farmers
but the extra effort of
providing soil moisture to
maintain vigorous growth
during a two week drought
period may add enough yield
to make that crop profitable.
The use of soil testing in
formation is a farm

good are the specialized
laboratory studies and
