Maryland agriculture is a big business and always has been. Agriculture is the nation’s largest business and today is the biggest dollar earner for the United States in its desperate need for exports. Some 33,000 Marylanders work on farms, but when you go along the economic chain, you find almost 200,000 Maryland farmers together run a big business when you consider that in 1977 they had $671 million in assets and $lO2 million in Labilities; leaving them with an equity position of $560 million.
