Why is it that those nasty horses can always tell
the difference from when I’m calling them to come
and eat to when I'm calling them to ride?
If I just walk out to the barn with the intention of
feeding them, they can be at the furthest point of
the 20 acre pasture, but before I’m safely inside
the feedroom, they’re well on their way to
thundering into the barn And if I’m the least bit
slow, they let me know that m no uncertain terms
they want their feed and they want it now 1
But, if I walk out to the barn with the intention of
going riding, those same crazy beasts ignore me. I

can call them until I'm blue in the face, bang on the
feed chest, and rattle the bucket, but they’re blind
and deaf to my endeavors. If they move at all, it’s
further out in the pasture
As a result, I usually end up going for a little hike
before I have my ride With halter and leadrope
firmly in hand, 1 trudge out through the creek and
up the hills to where the horses ate watching and
waiting
Finally, when I’m about 10 feet away from'them
they make their move Suddenly, it’s stampede
time, as they gallop past me and head in towards
the barn If you chase them they just run the
faster. The smartest move is to wait until they're
showing off, and just stand there watching them.
Usually, if they’re not chased, the game loses
interest for them and they allow themselves to be
caught in the barnyard. However, there are oc
casions when I have traipsed back and fourth over
the pasture from end to end no less than five times
before the horses decide enough running is
enough.
Those are some of the times I wonder why I like
horses.
