—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 21,1978 18 By DIETER KRIEG HARRISBURG - The Guernsey breed of dairy cattle is considered by some to be vanishing from the American agricultural scene, but fellows like Tweet Snider will never be con vinced of that. Snider has been associated with top quality Guernseys for all of his life - having grown up at Snider Homestead Farms, one of the most renowned Guern sey farms in the state. For the past four years, however, he’s been em ployed as manager of South Penn Farms, which is located near his home farm in Bedford County. Although South Penn Farms, owned by Donald P. Moran, was the home of Angus cattle, Snider’s love for Guernsey cows convinced Moran that the bams and pastures should be filled with the yellow dairy breed of cattle. On October 1 of last year a brand new Guernsey farm came onto the Pennsylvania dairy scene and they’re making waves which are being noticed all across the nation. The recent Penn sylvania Farm Show is just one more example in a long list which establishes South Penn Farms and manager Snider as a power to be reckoned with when top cows are discussed. The Farm Show’s Guernsey champion was - you guessed it - exhibited by Snider. Happy Hill AFC Loma, a 5-year old, was the grand champion. Within the last few months that Snider and Moran have had her, she has stood first at the Penn sylvania All-American, the Maryland State Fair, and now the Farm Show. The stylish cow is also an All- American 3-year old for 1977. Purchased by South Penn Farms last Fall for a record $20,000, the champion cow is a national class leader in milk production for 3-year olds Her record stands at 22,200 pounds of milk and 1021 pounds of butterfat, produced in 305 days She’s currently milking 118 pounds of milk per day, says Snider, after having freshened last October. The sire of the winning cow is Apple Brook Fames Corporal. The recently established Guernsey herd at South Penn Farms is stabled in a new barn equipped with 80 Show-Ease stalls, and pipeline milkers Two hundred acres of fields devoted to corn and hay help supply the nutritional needs of the cattle Snider makes it a point to give them the best of care That’s one of many reasons the farm came home from the Farm Show with the Premier Exhibitor banner Snider considered this year’s Guernsey show at the Farm Show to have been one of the best in years He’s been a regular participant for the past 20 years Ac cording to him, this year’s show was up in both quality and quantity, which is just one more sign that the $20,000 cow wins Guernsey show The has Guernsey cow is here to stay Showing the reserve grand champion at this year’s Farm Show was Rutter Brothers of York.
