Roger Grout, professor of agricultural engineering Extension at the Penn sylvania State University, has been named recipient of the 1977 Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association Cooperative Extension Service Award of $lOO and plaque “for valuable and noteworthy contributions to the state’s dairy industry.” The award was presented to Grout on January 10 at the association’s 107th annual meeting in Harrisburg as part of the 62nd Farm Show. As Extension agricultural engineer. Professor Grout initiated and developed numerous educational programs for dairy farmers throughout the state. These include livestock housing, barn ventilation, farm drainage, machinery ad justment and crop drying. One of his significant activities has involved the planning and engineering design of dairy barns, milking centers, and livestock management facilities. During the award winner’s professional career in Pennsylvania, he has provided individual assistance to over 5,600 farmers who were remodeling old barns or constructing new facilities. The estimated value of the completed structures ex ceeds $4O million. In charge of the Penn sylvania Extension Plan Service, Professor Grout is responsible for the preparation of acquisition and distribution of hundreds of plans for farm structures and livestock management facilities. Four of his plans relating to dairy herd management have been used nationwide. He served as chairman of by dairy assn. the Northeast Plan Ex change Committee.
