she grew squash. “I never
knew how much they
produced.” she said with a
shake of her head. She has a
lot of the squash still stored
in the cool egg room, and is
still finding people to share it
with.
Gerry and Donald are on
the committee for
registration for the state
Young Farmers Convention
which will be held in Lan
caster County. Reservations
haven’t yet started coming
in, but Gerry says she
imagines it will be a big job.
“He gets me into- these
things,” she says.
In addition to the work of
being a farm wife, which in
Gerry’s case involves
coordinating many busy
schedules, Gerry also made
many of the decisions about
how she wanted her house
remodeled. She said, “I

know what 1 want, and each
room is different.”
Family activities are
important to the Hersheys,
and one they have been
enjoying together this winter
is skating on the large pond
which is just outside their
home. They also enjoy
spending time at their Perry
County cabin, but usually
must take turns so someone
is home to do the chores.
The whole family iikes
Phillies baseball games, and
Gerry said that sometimes
they can all go together to
daytime games by pushing
back milking time just a
little.

Despite what may still
seem like a lot of activities,
Gerry says, “Donald has
slowed down considerably.”
That should make life easier
around the farm but with
active teenagers-, schedules
' are still hectic. Gerry says,
“We’ve encouraged them to
be in activities. We think it is
important.”
It is easy to see that Gerry
Hershey finds contentment
in her life as a farm woman
and the success her family
shares is in large part due to
her support.
