Chester White breeder adds feather to cap
By JOANNESPAHR
HARRISBURG - For four
out of the past five years
James T. Parlett, Airville
R 2, has shown the grand
champion Chester White gat
at the State Farm Show, and
this year he added another
feather to his cap. Not only
. did this York County breeder
take the grand champion
animal, but he showed the
• reserve champion Chester
White, as well, in Monday’s
breeding stock show.
With first place entries in
the January, February, and
March gilt classes, there
was little doubt that Parlett
would do anything but sweep
the show. However, it was
his second placed January
gilt that actually took the
reserve champion spot for
him.
Parlett’s grand champion
gilt was sired by Super Boy,
one of his top boars. Ac
cording to the Chester White
breeder. Super Boy sired the
champion boar of the 1976
. Chester White Summer
Spotlight Show held in Sioux
Falls, S.D., as well as the
reserve champion gilt at that
show. The Super Boy boar
also bred the first, second,
and third place boars of the
Southeastern Spotlight Show
held in Goldsboro, N.C.
An accomplished
showman, Parlett prefers to
restrict his entries to the
Farm Show, file Maryland
State Fair, the Keystone
Livestock Exposition, and
the various Chester White
spotlight shows held
throughout the year. At
Keystone this year he
showed the grand and
reserve grand champion

Repeating past years’ performances, Janies Parlett took both the grand and
reserve grand champion Chester Whites at the Farm Show. '
Chester White barrows as
well as the grand champion
crossbred. At the Maryland
State Fair be has had the
champion gilt for the last
four or five years in a row.
The next show coming up
for Parlett is the 1978
Southeastern Spotlight show
to be held in Georgia. He will
be heading there on
Saturday.
According to Parlett, the
key to success in the swine
breeding business is
reading, listening, and
staying one step ahead on
the incoming trends in the
business.
“You’ve got to have a good
boar,” he states, “and I
more or less lucked out when
we got Super Boy. He’s done
a real good job.”
When asked to outline the
four most important aspects
to look for when breeding
swine, he replied, “You
