76—Lancaster Fannin; Now is the time (Continued from Page 10) done from now until March; most trees are dormant by this time, when they can be pruned or transplanted. Trees that are getting too large, or have been damaged by wind, or other means, can be pruned and shaped as desired. As weather permits and considering the frozen condition of the ground, trees can be safely moved from now until they start to push buds next April. However, with evergreens it might be better to wait until March and April to do the transplanting. Some folks who are using “balled” Christmas trees will put them out soon after Christmas Day; this is satisfactory as long as they are kept well watered during warm weather for the remainder of the winter. We refer to the purchase of new animals as well as the travel to and from public livestock places. Our Extension veterinarians at Penn State continue to stress the need of health papers with every purchase and segregation for a 30-day period. Many livestock and dairy producers have bought diseases and bought them into their home herds. This should not be the experience, if proper health restrictions are followed. Footwear used in a public place of livestock should not be the same as worn m the barn or feedlot, unless careful cleaning and See Your Local Badger Dealer; GRUMELLI’S FARM SERVICE Mechanics Grove Quarryville, PA Ph (717)786-7318 RDS Lebanon, PA Ph (717)274-1436 FISHER BROTHERS 136 W High St Red Lion, PA Ph (717)244-2178 & 862-3406 disinfection has taken place. The proper cleaning and scrubbing before disin fecting is very important in order to keep the premises or equipment clean and free from infection. Stray animals and birds should be kept from bams and feed bunks as much as possible. Good sanitation practices are fundamental in any livestock or poultry business. TO PLACE SEED ORDERS It hardly seems time to be thinking about the 1978 growing season, but actually in less than 8 weeks the alfalfa and red clover producers will be broad casting their seeds. However, before this can be done, the seed has to be ordered and on hand. Therefore, if seed orders have not been placed, it is not too soon to get this job done. Many growers have special varieties that do best on their farm; this is the variety that should be or dered in time to get what you want. Delayed orders may mean having to take what is left. TO USE FARM RECORDS All that work in keeping a good set of farm accounts, or in paying someone else to keep them, should not be only for tax reporting ser vices. These records are valuable in making future plans and in making major FARMING IS BETTER WITH BADGER LLOYD E. I’d suggest that time be spent in the next several weeks evaluating the farm records to determine where the loop holes might be, and in what area to ex pand. Good records should furnish this information and reveal where the most profit is made. Don’t turn farm records over to the public accountant and forget about them. They are a useful tool in good farm planning. TO ENFORCE SANITARY PRACTICES With larger herds and flocks in this densely populated part of the country, the spread of diseases and infections can be accelerated by careless sanitation practices. In nearly all species of farm animals and birds, we have existing infections that are easily spread by man or beast. We urge producers to be extremely careful about buying infection, or bringing it home on their footwear or equipment. Visitors should be kept out of buildings unless strong disinfectants are used. Wild birds and animals must be regarded as possible sources of major infections. Producers are urged to manage carefully and with strict sanitation practices. TO SPREAD MANURE CAREFULLY To spread manure on frozen ground, or on top of snow, is inviting trouble from a water pollution standpoint. If this occurs in a built-up section of the area, no doubt the farmer will be djUTCHMAN FEED MILL, INC.
