—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 31 iQ; / 74 Brother and sister take Leb. 4-H livestock show By JOANNE SPAHR LEBANON - A brother sister duo walked away with the two grand championship titles of the Lebanon County Winter 4-H livestock show and sale held Tuesday at the fairgrounds, here. Bonnie Arnold, the 15- year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs. Leon Arnold, Lebanon R 7, showed her 1260 pound Charolais/Angus crossbred “Snuffy” to the title of the steer show, and her younger brother Tommy, 14, exhibited the heavyweight Duroc which went to the top of the swine show. Out of the 54 market hogs entered in the 4-H show, Tommy Arnold’s home bred 246 pound Duroc caught the eye of judge Mark Nestleroth, Dutch Valley Farm, Manheim R 5. Nestleroth preferred the animal because of its length of body and the adequate muscling down the top and through the ham. A six-year veteran of swine showing, this is Ar nold’s second major win of his career In the Spring of 1976 he showed the grand champion open gilt of the state Duroc show held at the Lebanon Fairgrounds. Although his father raises Yorkshires, Tommy says he prefers Durocs and has been raising them ever since his uncle purchased a sow for him when he was eight years old. Along with Tommy’s grand championship, he also exhibited hogs which were chosen to go to Farm Show competition. He will be entering one Yorkshire and one Duroc for competition on the Thursday of the in famous week. Tommy will also be taking his 4-H steer project to Harrisburg in January just as he has done for the past three years. Saying he likes the competition, Tommy states that he is looking forward to the Farm Show. At Tuesday’s sale, Ar nold’s grand champ sold for $1.70 per pound to Mark C. Hershey Farm, Lebanon R 5. At 246 pounds, the 14-year old showman earned $418.20 for that animal at that sale. In showing and fitting contests Arnold was named champion beef showman and Tommy Arnold, 14, showed the grand champion market hog of the Lebanon County 4-H livestock show and sale The heavyweight animal sold for 51.70 per pound to Mark C Hershey. Lebanon R 5 reserve champion showman and fitter. In a much smaller show of °ight 4-H baby beeves and three buddy steers, Bonnie Arnold took one step up from her last year’s reserve champion winnings to earn the grand championship title. Her heavyweight steer was bred by Dr. Harold Marshall, of Zion, Pa., and brought 80 cents per pound during Tuesday’s sale. Lebanon Valley National Bank, Lebanon, the buyer of the 1976 champ, increased last year’s bid by 20 cents to again take home the top 4-H steer. Miss Arnold has a list of show winnings to her credit including grand champion 4- H showman at the Lebanon Fair, reserve champion 4-H steer at 1976 roundup, and reserve champion hog at the Lebanon Fair several years ago. She has been a member of the Lebanon County 4-H livestock club for six years, showing three steers in her career as well as hogs each year. The money she earned from her top ranking steer will go into tiie bank for her college education. Taking the reserve champion m the steer show was a 1170 pound Charolais/Angus crossbred named “Wooly.” “Wooly” was shown by Danita Layser, Myerstown Rl, the 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Layser. Miss Layser comes from a 70-acre Charolais breeding farm which her father operates along with a jewelry store in Myerstown. Only showing for her second year, Miss Layser was pleased with her placing, and went on to be named the champion fitter of the 4-H beef show. Her steer sold to John Anspach, Lebanon County commissioner, and Henry Arnold, Active Line Realty, Lebanon, for 71 cents per pound. Taking this year’s reserve champion market hog title was an animal shown by Jay Bomgardner, Annville R 3, who exhibited last year’s champion steer. Bomgardner’s hog was a purebred Hampshire which swine Bonnie Arnold, Lebanon R 7, showed the grand champion steer of the Lebanon County 4-H livestock show and sale. Standing with her is John Gerdes, vice president of the Lebanon Valley National Bank, the firm which purchased the animal for 80 cents per pound. In her second year of 4-H, Danita Layser gar nered a champion title when her Charolais/Angus crossbred was named reserve champion of the Lebanon County 4-H beef show on Tuesday. weighed in at 200 pounds and was home bred. Bomgard ner also has two other purebred Hamps which will be going to farm show as well as his Here ford/Simmental 4-H steer. Pounding out his titles for the 4-H roundup, Bomgard ner was also named champion swine showman and reserve champion beef showman and fitter. His reserve champion sold for 70 cents per pound to Hatfield Packmg Company, Hatfield, Pa. Following the type judging, the swine and beef sales were held.
