The flesh of the fruit is creamy white, and it has a buttery, juicy texture. The Bose pear has a long, tapering neck. The skin is a dark yellow overlaid with a cinnamon-russet color, varying in intensity. The Bose pear has a buttery taste and is very juicy. It rates among the best in dessert quality. Both Bose and d’Anjous very likely will be hard to the touch when you buy them. D’Anjous will even look fairly green. Unlike most other fruits, pears do not successfully ripen on the tree. They are picked when they are mature to give assurance to proper ripening. To ripen these pears at home, put them in a brown paper bag and let them stand at room temperature for two to five days. Then give them the touch test. If they yield to gentle thumb pressure at the stem end, they are ready for some of the best fresh fruit eating you are likely to find this Winter. Refrigerate them. This will inhibit further ripening and keep them at the “just perfect for eating” stage. A pleasing shape, good taste, and ease of eating out of hand make Winter pears good additions to any fruit bowl. Their buttery texture and taste and just right amount of juiciness make them ideal candidates for a go-together food with cheese and wine, for salads, or for meat accompaniment. Put them on your shopping list. Get acquainted with the FARMERS’ FERTILIZER WORKS, INC. PREMIUM GRANULAR FERTILIZER & LAWN FOOD LIQUID NITROGEN - LIMESTONE - PESTICIDES PHONE 717-367-1211 365 W. JANUARY, START AFRESH MONTH Among the many other things that happen about now is that we look back over the year...we think about the mistakes we made...the fun we had...and we evaluate the progress we made. And then we look ahead to a new year, and we promise ourselves to sad through it without up setting our personal ships. Perhaps we decide to follow the advice of one of our friends and make it the year we enter our own personal sweepstakes. Or we decide to read all the books and articles we didn’t read last year. Also we might pledge ourselves to do one kind and thoughtful out-of-our-way thing each day. Then, too, we set down certain resolutions we hopefully plan to carry out during the year. And some of these resolutions could range from the ridiculous to the sublime. But at any rate, we’ve made them. January has a certain beauty about it... 1 like to think of it as start afresh month.
