wt— Lancaster farming, ueccitiber 3,4977 Md, FFA’ers honored at nat. convention ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Nine Maryland residents received recognition during the fif tieth National FFA Con vention, held Nov. 8 to 11 in Kansas City, Mo. One was named an Honorary American Fanner, and the others were awarded the American Fanner degree. All of the honors are based on individual achievement. Receiving the honorary citation was Charles B. Cramer IV, vocational agriculture teacher at Walkersville high school, Frederick County, for the past five years. Cramer had previously taught vo-ag at South Hagerstown and Williamsport high schools, Washington County. Included among the American Fanner degree winners were Dwight Dot terer of Woodsboro and Paul Dotterer of Union Bridge. They are cousins and graduates of Linganore high school in Frederick County. Other Frederick county residents honored were Grayson Lambert of Thurmont, a graduate of Catoctin high school, and Betsy Merchant of Walkersville, who graduated from Walkersville high school. Miss Merchant is now a senior in agricultural and Extension education at the University of Maryland in College Park. Another College of Agriculture student at the University of Maryland who also received the American Farmer degree was John A. Rigdon of Jarrettsville, Harford County, an agronomy junior. Elderly need milk Dr. Anthony Albanese, a National Dairy Council grant-in-aid recipient, has shown the need for more calcium in the diets of elderly persons. Work done at the Burke Kehibilitation Center and Osborn Memorial Home in White Plains, N.Y., demonstrated to Dr. Albanese that elderly women often consume little milk and’'other dairy foods. He believes that the low calcium intake in the diet can result in degeneration of bone tissue. Rounding out the Maryland honor ees were two western Maryland residents -Danfel Tice of Grantsville and Gerald Weimer of Lanaconing. Both are graduates of Northern Garrett Junior-Senior High School at Accident. All of the American Farmer degree winners from Maryland are currently farming, except for the two University of Maryland students. Maryland high school teams earned' two silver emblem awards and three bronze emblem plaques in judging competition during the fiftieth anniversary National FFA Convention. Contests in which Maryland teams earned recognition were as follows: Linganore high school, Frederick County earned a silver emblem plaque, finishing fifteenth in a field of 31 FFA teams. Two team members qualified for medal awards in individual competition. Judy Blank received a silver award, and Pat Kahler received a bronze rating. An Eastern Shore delegation from" Queen Annes County High School at Centreville earned a silver emblem plaque, finishing who finances tons? A second Damascus high school team earned a bronze emblem award plaque, placing twenty-eighth in a field of 35 FFA teams.
