The plant should be kept at a cool temperature from now to mid-November. High temperature (above 70 degrees) at this tune will prevent or delay flowering, since the buds are set in mid- November. A 55 degree F. night temperature is ideal. The frequent failure to bloom is usually related to either day length or temperature. One should keep the plant in a room where it will receive little or no artificial light at night. This light, along with natural hght, can make the days too long for bud formation. One should not overwater - just use enough water to keep the stems from shriveling. A person can repot the cactus after it flowers if necessary - but not now. Lancaster Farminj ♦ Ida’s Notebook My garden is almost an all-year project. Even m November it has more en dive and Chinese or celery cabbage than we’ll be able to use. It still has sweet potatoes that are mudded in and difficult to dig. There are parsnips in all stages of development - from tiny seedlings to those with roots a foot long. There are carrots, broccoli, swiss chard, radishes, lettuce, green and red cabbage, plus beets and parsley growing even now. I’ve just taken up the two rows of peanuts and am drying them on the furnace. We roasted some in the oven the other night, and they are delicious, though small. The last hmas, green beans, and peppers have just been November 5,1977 Saturda' * ♦ Ida Risser frozen and the green tomatoes wrapped in newspaper to ripen in the cellar. I’ve recently finished a job which lasted longer than I expected. We got all new sash for the barn and It took me days to apply wood preserver on them and then white paint on all 14 of them. That was almost 100 win dowpanes. Everytime that I finish a pamt job, I feel it will be my last one for ages, but then in a few months I start another one. While painting, I had tune to watch the baby kittens playing on our back porch. They climbed into shoes, boots, boxes, and baskets and then tried to get out. They tumbled over each other and ran up our hemlock tree. But, they must move to the barn as I’m not about to scrub the porch everyday as their mother hasn’t trained them. Are other farms periodically overrun with cats? I hestitate to count them but would estimate that a couple dozen are running around here. Some of them catch mice while others are just boarders. 47
