By Doris Thomas Lancaster Home Economist HOW TO FIGHT THE TV TOY SELL Each year at this time, children receive a not-so subtle brainwashing from toymakers advertising on television. Children are likely to be watching lavish advertisements that whet their pre-Christmas appetite for dolls, race sets and other expensive toys. The advertisers know what they’re doing. They have studied children and know the best way to create desire in a youngster. For instance, you’ll notice that a few toys are advertized repeatidly, making the child feel he just can’t get along without them. If your child clamors for expensive toys he's seen on television, meet the problem head-on. Listen to what he wants. Then check the toy yourself, either in a catalog or a store. Evaluate each toy according to its safety, cost and suitability for your child. If a toy doesn’t meet any one of these requirements, than it’s best to sit down with your child and explain why he shouldn’t expect that particular item to be under ERTH-RITE SOIL CONDITIONER MAXICROP LIQUID PLANT FEEDING FEED-RITE Vitamin & Mineral for livestock and poultry ZOOK & RANCK, INC. You’ll fmd it easy to steer some children towards a gift you already have on your list. Offer an older child the alternative of saving his money to buy the toy. This tactic can help to teach him the value of money, too! A NEW PRODUCT LIQUID BROWN SUGAR There is another new product on the market to \ 5 , ,*.K&: satisfy Americans’ great sweet tooth - liquid brown sugar. It is available statewide in the larger supermarket chains. Soon there will be television advertising to tell con sumers of the product and get them to buy it. Liquid brown sugar is a light brown sweet syrup. It comes from a step in the manufacture of regular brown sugar and is brown sugar in water. If the water had been removed, the product would have been regular light brown sugar. Nutritionally, it provides calories and a few trace minerals. There are not enough minerals to be of importance in the diet. Because the flavor of liquid brown sugar is stronger, the directions on the bottle suggest using just half as much as when using regular brown sugar.. However, flavor and sweetness are two different things. The sweetness of this product is not double that of brown sugar, so using the product in half amounts, as suggested on the bottle, produces a less sweet product. Adding a little white sugar could make up the sweetness. For price comparison, the 16 oz. bottle sells for 89 cents and substitutes for 2 lbs. of regular brown sugar selling for 65-70 cents. One suggested use of the product is as syrup. The unit price of syrup is from 3.7 cents to 5.4 cents per ounce. The unit price of liquid brown sugar is 5.5 cents per ounce, so liquid brown sugar costs more than both regular brown sugar and syrup. The advantages of the product over regular brown sugar mclude no lumps or hardness, easy measuring and easy blending. The product should be refrigerated after opening. For use, the label suggests using the product in brownies, cookies (not cakes), sauces, frostings, glazes, and syrup. Some bottles carry a hang-tag folder of tested recipes. However, when liquid brown sugar is substituted for regular brown sugar in your own recipes, results sometimes are disap pointing. This is due to the water in liquid brown sugar. Commonwealth National Bank A because of the flour’s reaction to that water. A company spokes-person told us that such a recipe’s product will be acceptable but not the same as that produced with regular brown sugar. If a recipe produces a bid product when made with liquid brown sugar, the recipe might be improved by cutting down the other liquid in the recipe. If that liquid is milk, then a small amount of dry milk solids might be added. Happy to help you
