16—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 29,1977 Now is the time (Continued from Page 10) tulip tree, American linden, flowering dogwood and plum. You can wrap them now, but be sure to take the wrapping off late next spring. It’s best to use commerical tree wrapping, starting at the ground level and working up the tree, overlapping about every half-inch. Tie the wrap with twine, but be careful not to tie it too tight. Smaller ornamental plants can be mulched, but don’t do this until there have been several hard freezes. Mulching will not keep the soil from freezing but it helps keep the soil frozen to prevent root injury caused by alternate freezing and thawing of the soil. It also prevents moisture loss from the soil suface. To Clean Pesticide Equipment Now that gardening season has ended, do not neglect to empty, clean and properly store your spraying and dusting equipment. Never store equipment which contains pesticides or pesticide residues. A thorough washing with hot water and detergent is best for sprayers. Be sure to run the hot wash water through the hoses and nozzle. Make sure the sprayer is thoroughly dry before storing it in a dry place. To assure drying and reduce the chances of rusting, lock the nozzle m the open position to permit free air movement. Addition of automotive radiator rust inhibitor will help prevent corrosion during storage. Inspect the parts, rubber gaskets and valves. Replacement parts might be easier to find now than in the spring. Dusters should be emp tied. Use the dust on the garden or flowers in the recommended manner or return to original container. Clean the duster well and oil the moving pans. PA Phone 717 786 7318 discouraged from playing with pesticide spray equipment, even when it is clean. Encourage children to develop good habits around spray equipment. Remind them that sprayers are not play toys. A sprayer which is left dirty over winter will probably not work at all next spring. Some chemicals will corrode the metal parts over an extended period of time and others will dry into a clay-like consistency which defies removal. A sprayer which is given good care now can last many years and can result in a big savings in terms of parts and labor. Also saves frustrations next season when neglected equipment probably won’t work properly, if at all.
