mmmm....there’s a lizard m
thebathrom!”
Our two screaming
youngsters came charging
out of the first floor
facilities, falling liver each
other’s feet in their stam
pede to escape.
I covered the telephone
receiver speaking end with
my hand and demanded,
“There’s a what in where?”
But I had heard right the
first time, according to the
still shreikmg, jumping-up
and-down kids.
“Quiet,” I begged. “Can’t
you see I’m talking on the
phone. As soon as the
lizard’s finished brushing his
teeth, I’m sure he’ll leave.”

the bathroom doorway,
peeking in and shouting
about how ugly this huge and
dangerous creature was.
Shortly the other farm
wife and I wound up our
conversation; I donned my
hard hat, grabbed a big club
and tried to remember if the
Game Commission requires
a license for lizard-hunting.
But the beast had
vanished. We searched
under the rug, behind the
wastebasket, under the
bottom of the shower curtain
and even in the closet.
“He’s probably at some
lizard emergency room,
recovering from the heart
attack you two gave him
from screaming,” I coun
tered, when Patty and Rich

demanded that I explain
what happened to their
visitor. But in spite of
careful monitoring of that
room for the remainder of
the evening, the quarry was
nowhere to be found.
(Now, incidentally, we try
to run a normal(?)
household; lizards are oc
casionally discovered under
a stray pot in the
greenhouse—but never
before in the house.
However, I vividly recall the
Summer nine years ago
when a very pregnant
mamma milk snake chose
our house foundation in
which to nurture her brood of
babies. There’s a certain
thrill about finding snakes in
your cellar, even when
they’re only six inches long.)
One week later, Patty
again came screaming up
the basement stairs. Guess
what the cat was playing
with in the basement.

enough, there he was! All
two inches, barely, of tiny
brown lizard, scurrying
away from the pesky cat as
fast as four quarter-inch legs
can run.
*“Oh, for crying out loud-is
that what you two have been
yelling about all this tune?”
They giggled, knowing that,
as usual, they were at least
keepmg old Mom on her toes.
Well, the itty-bitty beast
was given a free trip to the
back yard, well away from
disrupting cats and children.
But sometimes I find myself
wondering, as I venture
barefooted into the
bathroom
“Dear Santa Claus, could
you please bring me a large
can of ‘Raid’ for Christmas
this year? Thanks.” J.B.
