♦ Notebook
Last month when I started
to pot my house plants, prior
to arranging them on win

was reminded of a remark
made by a neighbor lady.
She said, “You mean to tell

me that you go to all the
work of putting them in the
garden and then repot them
in the Fall?” I don’t think of
it as too much work because
the flowers such as begonias,
impatiens, Joseph’s Coat,
and coleus are so much
healthier from spending the
Summer outside and their
colors are so vibrant. Now
my job will be to try and
keep them that way during
the coming months.
At the present time, I have
a beautiful bouquet of one
dozen red roses to enjoy as
my oldest son, who will be
married next month,
brought them for me when
he visited last weekend. He
came to work for his father
but it rained, so he watched
football on TV and slept on
the sofa.
Recently, I found a tiny
booklet of “valuable
recipes” concocted by a man
by the name of H. G. Buch of
Oregon, Pa. in 1886. You
would not believe the things
printed therein unless you
really read them.
Most of the “recipes” deal
with curing horses of myriad
ailments. The first one in

this booklet, that is almost
100 years old, gives the
ingredients to use for “wind
colic” in horses. It is as
follows: one handful of
chicken dung, one handful
sage, one handful grown ivy,
one and one-half
tablespoonfuls of
asafoetida, and one quart
cider vinegar. Boil this to a
pint and then give it to the
horse, it advises. Other
ingredients used for fever,
etc. are aconite, fish pickle,
arsenic, dogwood blossoms,
brimstone and fennycrake.

Solar heated house
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A
solar heated house that can
supply up to 75 per cent of its
own heat almost anywhere
in the United States, has
been designed by
agricultural engineers of the
U.S. Department of
Agriculture.
The three bedroom house
has 1,100 square feet of living
space that includes one bath,
a living-dining room com
bination, kitchen and
laundry and garage.
The solar heat collector is
fiberglass reinforced plastic
panelling. It can be built on
the front or back roof of the
house, but must face south
for maximum sun exposure.
Heat is collected in the attic,
which is painted black.
Through a system of ducts
the heat is transferred to the
house for heating, or is
diverted to a layer of
crushed rock beneath the
