Wood-burners are making dramatic comeback
MARIETTA - The United
States can save over 70
million barrels of fuel per
year if a projected 5 million
homes use wood as their
main heat source by 1980.
Each home might use three
full cords of wood per year,
according to a study by the
National Solid Fuel Trades
Association, Inc.
The home heating industry
is undergoing significant
changes, with wood-buming
stoves and fireplaces
making a remarkable
comeback. The trend is so
strong, in fact, that dealers
are having trouble filling
orders. One Virginia firm
notes its output has doubled,
while demand for their stove
has increased five-fold.
Last Monday ap
proximately 125 wood
burning stove dealers from
Pennsylvania, Maryland,
and Delaware met near here
at the Indian Springs Golf
Course. Sponsored by
Hiestand Distributors of
Marietta and East Peter
sburg, the day-long meetings
focused on changing trends

heating scene. Hiestand

According to a recent
study at Penn State
University, wood from the
extensive forests of Penn
sylvania could become a
valuable alternative source
of energy where timberlands
are concentrated.
The researchers
established an evaluation
procedure for considering
wood as a fuel source. They
determined that 17 million
acres of Pennsylvania forest
land are producing three
times the amount of wood
being cut annually to supply
the wood-using industries.
This means that large
supplies of wood and wood
wastes are available to use
as fuel, according to Dr. P.
R. Blankenhom, Dr. T. W.
Bowersox, and Dr. W. K.
Murphey of the faculty m
forest resources.
They pointed out that
future energy will likely
come from a combination of
oil and gas, coal, nuclear,
and solar sources. Wood and
wood wastes are considered
solar sources of energy. The

Penn Staters said that wood
for energy must be
developed without affecting
existing uses of the forest
such as water resources,
wildlife habitat, forest in
dustries, and recreation.
The researchers studied,
for example, the forest
sources in a nine county
region of north central
Pennsylvania. They found
that one-third of the annual
tree growth in the region is
available to produce about 31
million cubic feet of wood for
fuel. And they observed that
the heat potential in 31
million cubic feet of wood is
nearly equial to 3 million
tons of bituminous coal or 1.5
million barrels of number 2
fueloil.
Speakers at the Hiestand
meeting noted that one acre
of woodland can supply one
cord of wood per year
without diminishing the
supply. It would simply
involve using undergrowth
and fallen trees. One might
also consider a carefully
planned thinning program.
It’s estimated that only
seven acres of woodland are

“Wood is a renewable

managed well,” a
spokesman said.
Colie Davis from the
National Solid Fuel Trade
Association informed the
dealers that he is working
towards a goal which would
include solid fuels (coal and
wood) m tax rebate bills for
solar energy. Such
legislation is being con

openly being encouraged to
