Tissue grapes produced
BELTSVILLE, Md, -
Less than a year ago, a
vineyard now containing 65
grape vines in Silver Run,
Md., began in a research
laboratory as just one cubic
centimeter of grape vine
tissue.
The vineyards are part of
an experiment conducted by
plant physiologist Dr.
William R. Krul of USDA’s
Agricultural Research
Service to propagate grape
vines faster and more
efficiently through a
technique known as “tissue
culturing.” Thousands of
grape vmes can be produced
from a single tissue culture
in half the time it to
propagate a few hundred
vmes by stem cuttings, the
conventional way to
propagate grapes.
Dr. Krul’s vineyard is the
first in the U.S., perhaps in
sylvania, New York, New
Jersey, Maryland, and
Texas. The learn contest will
be held October 15 with the
individual junior jumping
competition to be held the
next day.
The Medal Class is the
nation’s premier hor
semanship event, bringing
together all the under
eighteen riders who have
qualified for the event the
past year. This class is
scheduled on October 16.
Throughout the week of
the world, consisting of vmes
grown entirely from isolated
cells.
Tissue culturing provides
scientists and nurserymen
with an aseptic method of
obtaining true-to-form
plants from bits of immature
flower buds, growing tips, or
other tender parts of plants
that possess disease
resistance or other desired
characteristics.
The experimental
vineyard is expected to be at
full production by the
summer of 1980.
