    Fretz wins state 4-H
UNIVERSITY PARK -
Sarah Fretz, 15, of ZionsviUe
Rl, who has compiled an
outstanding record in 4-H
work, was recently named
state sheep contest winner in
the 1977 4-H National Awards
Program.
Sarah will receive a $5O
U.S. Savings Bond and will
be eligible to attend National
4-H Congress in Chicago,
November 27 to December 1,
and compete for awards at
the national level.
Regional
KIMBERTON - The
Southeastern counties of
Berks, Lehigh, Nor
thhampton, Chester,
Montgomery, Bucks,
Delaware, and Philadelphia
combined recently for an
animal show. The show, held
at Kimberton Fair Grounds
in Chester County, featured
rabbits, cavies, horses, dogs,
and sheep.
In the sheep showmanship
contest honors went to Glen
Goll of Bucks County while
Melissa Fritz of Lehigh
County was junior showman.
First year showman was
Brenda Croll, Bucks County.
Champion ram of the show
was a Hampshire yearling
shown by Sarah Fritz,
Lehigh County, and
champion ewe lamb of the
show was shown by Irene
Landis, Montgomery
County.
In the blocking contest,
where 4-H members match
their skills in sheep fitting,
Fred Keys, Chester County
emerged as the senior

Pland Company, operated
by J. Michael Zimmerman
of Millersville, recently
opened for business at 1
North Hess Street, here. The
company offers a full range
of land management related
services for agricultural and
commercial purposes with
emphasis on erosion and
sedimentation control. The
mam thrust of his activities
is in the area of agricultural
fertilizer as he promotes a
complete program of liquid
fertilization products in
cluding comprehensive soil
testing for his customers and
liquid applicator equipment.
Zimmerman is a graduate
of The Pennsylvania State
University with degrees in
agricultural business and
agronomy. He received his
training and experience in
the land management field
through his work with the
U S Soil Conservation
Service in Lancaster and
several other counties as a
soil conservationist, farm
planner. He is a native of
Lancaster County and
moved back to the county
from out of state a year ago
with his wife, the former
Mary Beth Lehman also of
Lancaster
Support of the sheep
project is provided by the
Wilson Foods Corporation.
The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John Fretz, Sarah is a
sophomore at the Swain
School. She has been a 4-H
member for seven years.
A member of the Lehigh
County 4-H Sheep and Lamb
Club and Lehigh County 4-H
Hog Club, she served as
president and news reporter
and assisted with club ac
tivities and events as a teen
leader.

blocking champion and
David Ernst, Berks County,
was junior blocking
champion.
In the rabbit and cavy
show, there were 30 entries
consisting of 14 cavies and 16
rabbits. In the rabbit
division, 5 breeds were
shown with the grand
champion, a New Zealand,
shown by Betsy Hottle,
Bucks County. Best opposite
was a Dutch, shown by Jena
Wood, Montgomery County.
In the cavy show, grand
champion went to Bonnie
Hottle, Bucks County and the
Best opposite was shown by
Barbara Cressman, Bucks
County. Judge for the rabbit
and cavy show was John
Greybeal.
The 4-H Horse Production
projects were also judged at
the Regional Animal Show.
Champion of the show was a
yearling filly, Keo's Top
Choice, shown by Barbara
Wadsworth of Boyertown.
Reserve Champion of the
show was a 2-year old

The state sheep contest
winner completed projects
m market lambs, breeding
sheep, beef, swine,
veterinary science,
photography, forestry,
geology, teen leadership,
’ and foods.
Locally, she participated
in the roundup, officers
training camp, achievement
night, and sheep shows.
She also took part in the
Regional 4-H Teen Leaders
Quarter Horse gelding
owned by Terri Landis of
Mainland. Judge of the horse
production projects was
Lynn Sarla of Collegeville.
In the dog obedience and
showmanship classes, junior
showman winner was David
Amalong, Intermediate
champion was Ann Cremers,
and senior showman Denise
Andrien, all of Chester
County.
In the obedience classes
the results were as follows:
Sub-novice, Susan
Werkheiser, Northhampton;
novice, John Williams,
Schuylkill; graduate novice,
Diane Texter, Bucks; Open,
Brenda Hausamann, Lehigh.
Judges for the show were
Nancy Reiter, Harry
Proctor and Doris Miller.
The Regional Animal
Show was sponsored by the
Cooperative Extension
Services of the Southeast
counties along with adult
and teen leaders who
planned and carried out the
various shows.
