Crafts to accent
By JOANNE SPAHR
LANCASTER - If con
sumers in Lancaster County
don’t know, now, why they
need their friendly neigh
borhood fanner, they most
likely will become educated
on the subject by the end of
next week. From Monday
through Saturday, October
17 through 22, the Lancaster
County Farmers’
Association will be holding
their annual mall promotion
at the Park City shopping
mall near Lancaster.
On the slate of events are
crafts demonstrations,
livestock and machinery
displays, as well as a puppet
show every evening. The
dairy committee of the
Association will also be
handing out milk samples
for all passers-by to enjoy.
Two of the 11 crafts which
will be demonstrated during
the week include vegetable
flower creations on wood,
and broomstick lace.
Teaching the broomstick
lace session will be Mrs.
Mary McClenaghan, an
experienced craftsperson
who has been crocheting for
10 years. Since she gathers
“Vegetable Flowers on Wood” will be the craft
taught by Mrs. Dorothy Kreider on October 21 at
the Park City shopping mall. Mrs. Kreider will be
helping out with the Lancaster County Farmers’
Association mall promotion.

crochet in her “spare”
moments.
On October 18 she will be
located in the Gimbel’s mall
where she will demonstrate
a new design of double stitch
crochet as well as the
broomstick lace. Her
scheduled hours are from 1
to 2:30 p.m.
Dorothy Kreider, Mount
Joy R 2, will be setting up
shop in the mall on Friday
from 1 to 3 p.m. to teach
“vegetable flowers on
wood.”'This rustic craft is a
variation of dried flower
arranging. In this particular
instance, potatoes and
carrots are sliced
diagonally, dried, and then
arranged on unfinished wood
to create a flowered wall
plaque in subdued shades of
oranges and browns.
Mrs. Kreider, who, with
her family, operates a 250
acre dairy farm, chose the
craft mainly because it
promotes farm products, but
also because it is simple.
“I like a craft that is not so
complicated,” she says.
Other hobbies she enjoys
are macrame, dried flower
arranging, quilling,
decoupage, sewing, and
bottle cutting.
