LEBANON - Conservation
minded farmers are always
looking for new and better
ways to improve their fields
and cut down on their losses
of topsoil, and Lebanon
Countians are no exception
to the rule. That is why on
October 12, a group of in
terested farmers and
agriculturalists could be
seen taking a mini-tour of
conservation practices and
cover crop seeding. The trip
was sponsored by the
Lebanon County Con
servation District.
The mam emphasis of the
tour was a seeding technique
tried for the first time this
year by some of the farmers
in the area. A cover crop of
rye grass had been planted
in standing corn fields on
August 30 by the use of a
helicopter. An inspection
was done of some of the
fields involved in the project.
The first stop on the tour
was the Arthur Krall farm,
located less than a mile west
of Flintville, near Lebanon.
There the seeded fields were
examined at close quarters
and impressions of the
results of the seeded crop
given.
The main purpose of the
rye grass seeding is to give

It was estimated that the
rye grass cover can save a
minimum of Vz ton of topsoil
per acre, depending on the
slope of the fields.
Other farm visits included
the fields of Mark Bom

Elmer Martin, all m the
same area. Each farm had
had some cornfields seeded
with rye grass by helicopter.

Farmers estimated that
the cost of the rye grass
seed applied by the
helicopter came to between
$l3 and $l5 per acre, in
cluding the seed cost m that
estimate. They felt that this
was no more expensive than
if they had done the job
themselves, and by having
the helicopter do the
seeding, it freed their time to
get to other work at a time
when much is to be done on
the farm.
