—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 8,1977 24 Young ones honored at Lebanon Holstein dinner By DIETER KRIEG MOUNT ZION - Gathering here and filling every seat in the Fellowship Hall of Zoar’s Lutheran Church, Lebanon County Holstein breeders paid tribute to some of the organizations younger members. The occasion was the annual banquet of the Lebanon County Holstein Club, held Tuesday evening. Gestures of appreciation weren’t limited to young adults, however. Early m the program, Ken Mase in troduced a gentlemen who needs no introduction among Pennsylvania Holstein breeders. Rising from his chair amidst applause was Hubert Miller of Myer stown, 81, whose Lime Rock Holstems have been making a name for themselves and their owner .for more than half a century. Miller is a lifetime member of the County Holstein Club and serves on the organization’s board of directors and executive committee. Taking home placques and certificates for meritorious production records by their Holstein animals were more than a dozen junior mem bers. Among them was Lebanon County Dairy Prmcess, Joyce Moyer, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Moyer, Lebanon. The petite and pretty brunette was called to the front four times to receive recognition for her animals’ production records. Joyce’s aged cow led the list for butterfat production with a tally of 699 pounds. Following, in order, were Jane Bomgardner, Kirby Horst, and Rick Krall. In milk production for aged cows, Rick Krall’s bovine beat the competition with a record of 19,673 pounds. Placmg after him were Kirby Horst, Joyce Moyer and Jane Bomgardner. David Bomgardner scored two victories with his 4-year old, which finished her most recent lactation with 25,748 pounds of milk and 774 pounds of butterfat. Behind him in milk were Jane Bomgardner, Joyce Moyer, and Barbara Sattazahn. For fat production, the list was rounded out by the same three people, the only dif ference being that Barbara Sattazahn edged Joyce Moyer for third place. Vincent Arnold and Alan Hostetter captured first places in milk and butterfat production, respectively, for 3-year old Holsteins. Ar nold’s animal led with 18,909 pounds, to beat entries by Ray Moyer and Pat Arnold. Hostetler’s 3-year old churned out 726 pounds of butterfat to go ahead of Holsteins owned by Ray Moyer, Vincent Arnold and Kirby Horst, who placed behind him in that order. For 2-vear olds. Barbara Sattazahn’s young cow Junior members of the Lebanon County Holstein Association who won top honors for their cows' production records were, left to right: David Bomgardner, Vince Arnold, Joyce Moyer, Gary Reist, Alan Hostetter, and Barbara Sattazahn. Kirby Horst, Pat Arnold, Ray Moyer and Jane Bomgardner were second place winners with their cows. topped the field with a record of 19,856 pounds. Coming in close behind, at 19,674 pounds, was a cow owned by Pat Arnold. Gary Reist and Dave Bomgardner were third and fourth, respectively. Gary Heist’s first calf heifer checked in with 719 pounds of butterfat to take the crown in that division. Alan Hostetter, David Bomgardner and Pat Arnold trailed in that order. Another group of youngsters who were honored was the 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Team from Lebanon County, which came away with a second place during state-wide competition at the Penn sylvania All-American in Harrisburg last week Members of the team were Dave and Jane Bomgardner, Kirby Horst, and Alan Hostetter. Other portions of the program, which was at tended by an estimated 250 people, included remarks from Hershey Bare, state director for the club; Robert Morris, representing the Pennsylvania Holstein Association; Robert Lentz, sales representative of the National Association; and Clarence Stauffer, program director for HFAA. Comments by the four men centered around mem bership dues and registration fees, both of which have been approved for changes which go into effect in the near future. Calves must also be registered by the age of six months, rather than the previous 8-month limit, if lower registration fees are to hold. Members are urged to take note of these changes and to pass the word along to anyone who may not yet be aware of the new rulings. It was also noted that the Pennsylvania Holstein Association’s farm near * » Middletown is receiving improved and enlarged export facilities and that the new building was designed to be multi-purpose. Holstein breeders throughout the area are encouraged to consider raising both heifers and bulls for possible sale to foreign countries, several speakers noted. Concluding the program was a slide presentation on the Club’s tour to Canada last Spring. Among the farms the group visited were: Agro Acres, Browndale Farm, Eby holme Farms, Ebydale Farms, United Breeders, Spring Farms, Rowntree Farms, Via-Pax, Roman dale Farms, Oak Ridges Farm, Hanover Hill Farm, and Roybrook Farm. Entertainment for the evening was also provided by the Maulfair Sisters - Elaine, Diane, and Brenda - of Jonestown. LOOK FOR ADAMS CO. O.C. RICE. INC.
