MOUNT JOY - A farm
home tour of seven homes,
all over 100 years old, is
planned for October 15, by
the members of Lancaster
County Farm Women
Society 27. Beginning at one
p.m., the tours will be
conducted throughout the
afternoon and early evening
by the farm women mem
bers and hostesses.
All the farm homes are
located in the Mount Joy
area in Northern Lancaster
County, and the tour can
begin in any home. Visitors
will travel from home to
home at their leisure, with
special features and door
prizes being offered in each
home.
The Lancaster County
Dairy Princess, Lancaster
County Poultry Queen, and
Lancaster County Beef
Queen will be present in
some of the homes to meet
visitors. Tickets for the tour
can be purchased from any
hostess for $2.50 on the day of
the tour.
The homes which will be
open on the tour includes
“Peaceful Grove Farm,” the
home of Albert and Kathryn
Fry. The brick buildings
were built in 1868, and the
five bay farm house features
a walk-in fireplace. The
house is furnished with early
American and Victorian age
antiques, many which come
from past generations of the

Farm home tour

table, a Victorian sofa,

drop leaf table, comer
cupboard, and a 1771 Kass.
Dairy product door prizes
will be offered at this farm.
Another home on the tour,
built around 1850, is a log
house with a later stone
addition; now the home of
the Roy Sauder family, who
did most of their own
remodeling. Included in the
tour will be an original
comer 'cupboard, butcher
bench, and an 1885 washing
machine. Also pipeline
milking in the dairy bam can
be visited between 4:30 and
6:30 p.m. Cake decorating
will also be featured and
visitors can register for a
birthday month doll cake.
The home of James and
Martha Garber, built in the
early 1800’s, features sand
stone window sills, wide

built fireplaces are still in
working condition. Many
crafts and floral
arrangements, along with
the wide variety of antiques,
will be on view at this farm.
The Lancaster County
Poultry Queen will be
present at this farm and a
dressed capon will be offered
as a door prize.
Owned by Wayne and
Yvonne Miller, the Green
Acres Guest Farm, dates
from 1844 and is known as
one of the first blueprint
houses in the area. The 12
room house is furnished with
Victorian and early
American antiques of which
many are family heirlooms.
