Plant lovers’ corner
DOVER, Del. - The countryside will soon be ablaze with
the brilliant colors of autumn foliage. As frosts wither and
brown gardens. University of Delaware Extension garden
specialist Dave Tatnall suggests taking a cue and cashing
in on nature’s colorful Fall celebration. The best way a
home owner can do this is to include in his landscape some
of the many ornamental trees and shrubs which have eye
catching foliage at this time of the year.
The following is a list of deciduous trees and shurbs
which Tatnall recommends for this purpose. Besides

cellent ornamental value at other seasons.
Recommended trees are - Flowering Dogwood - red
leaves in Fall; Sourwood- scarlet; Gray (“Clump”) Birch
- yellow leaves, which contrast nicely with its white bark;
Sweet Gum - red, yellow or purple foliage; Whte Ash -
deep purple and yellow; Norway Maple - yellow; Sugar
Maple - brilliant yellow, orange, and red foliage (makes a
really outstanding display); Scarlet Oak - scarlet.
Recommended shrubs are - Royal Azalea - yellow,
orange and red leaves; Japanese Barberry - scarlet;
Blueberry - scarlet; Redvein Enkianthus - orange to
scarlet foliage; Winged Euonymus - deep red to brilliant
scarlet foliage (one of the best); Splcebush - yellow;
Doublefile Viburnum - deep red to purple; Common
Witch-hazel - yellow.
Check out these and other plants this Fall while they’re
actually showing their autumn colors. Late October or
November is the time to plant them. To get an idea of how

they look in the landscape, check out public parks and
gardens, as well as your neighbor’s backyard. You’ll even
see some growing in the wild.
Many of these handsome foliage plants are available at
local nurseries and garden centers.
