She added that it’s important “to have a good person behind the pencil” when entries are being brought in so that mistakes are not made. Mrs. Bowers seems to have a genuine interest in the community, and sticks to her interests over long periods. She was president of the Bareville Fire Company Auxiliary for 20 years "and when she retired she was presented with a life membership, a watch, a painted platter with a picture of the fire company with the engine in front. She is still active in the Friendly Circle of Rural Women, a group of rural friends who do charitable works and who take enjoyable trips for themselves. She said they meet once a month and feels she was initially asked to jojn because “I was a driver.” She noted that in earlier days not many women drove or had a car to get around. Mrs. Bowers also served as president of the Conestoga Valley Auxiliary to the Lancaster General Hospital for 16 years, and has been a member for 28. When asked about her long years of service in positions of responsiblity, she said, “Someone has to make the sparks fly! ” She is also a member of the Salem Evangelical Church in Voganville. A widow, Mrs. Bowers stays busy with a small garden of tomatoes, onions, red beets and dom, and enjoys a wide variety of flowers. This display, which is a segment of the Elizabethtown Community Fair, leads off activities which will con tinue until October 1.
