AT Notebook In reading my father’s diary, written in the 1920’5, I’ve been reminded of living patterns in bygone days. Most of his entries were ’one-liners’, simply, “worked so and so all day.” But, occasionally he added an interesting item such as annual trips to North East, Md., to buy fish on Ascension Day, a trip in the Fall to a farm in the Strasburg area to buy watermelons or a trip to Bowers Beach and a reported catch of 54 bass. He tells of buying his first radio, of a cow bloating and dying and of butchering a pig weighing 478 pounds. In season, he helped his three neighbors to thresh, dug out briars, and witnessed a relative’s will. However, there was one day in May of 1928 that rated a full five lines in his diary. On that particular day he watered his tobacco plants, ft GARDEN SPOT PROMOTIONS PRESENTS j j.Hc p r tAJJITE yJWUSIC THE NEW LIFE FOR GIRLS Admission. Then about 2; 30 a.m. he was awakened by an alarm ringing on the headboard of his bed. Someone had gone into our chicken house! He pulled on his overalls, grabbed the shotgun and hurried quietly out into the garden behind the hen house. In the ensuing battle, he was fired at five times and returned three shots. They got away. The next day burlap bags were found on a back cinder road near our barn which contained red feathers, white feathers and black feathers. The State Police came and dug bullets out of the buildings. Times haven’t changed that much-they had petty thieves than, too. I’m simply grateful that he didn’t get himself killed on that awful night. Farm Women’s Calendar Today, September 24 Lancaster Co.
