Champion Holstein at Solanco belongs to Welk
By JOANNESPAHR
QUARRYVILLE - They
kept it all in the family last
Thursday, when Paul Welk
of Welk-Crest Farm, Peach
Bottom Rl, beat the five
year winning streak of his
cousin Maurice Welk,
Quarryville R 2, in the open
Holstein show at the
Southern Lancaster County
Community Fair. Paul Welk
walked away with the grand
champion and senior
champion of the show.
Maurice Welk, however,
didn’t slip too far behind in
his winnings, coming up with
the reserve grand champion
and reserve senior cham
pion.
Paul Welk’s six-year-old
daughter of Simpon Farm
Tidy Gent, classified “88
Very Good” swayed the
judging in her direction with
her udder, judged best udder
of the show. Judge John
Smith, York County Ex
tension agent, remarked
about her dairy character.
Up to this point the
champion Rock Hall Tidy
Diane has a production
record of 17,825 pounds of
milk and 727 pounds of fat.
She was- bred by Homer B.
Readinger, Fleetwood. Pa.
According to Welk, who
hasn’t shown animals in 12
years since 4-H, his aged cow
was never shown before. She
wouldn’t have been shown
this year, either, if it hadn’t
been for the urging of Welk’s
son.
“We didn’t think we could
get her to lead, but we
worked about three weeks
and were finally able to,”
Welk explained. Welk will
probably continue his
showing in the upcoming
years.
The reserve grand
champion animal,
Southland Headliner Penny,
a three-year-old with a two
year-old production record
Champions of the open class Holstein show at the Solanco Fair were: (left to
right) Ken Rutt of Edgefield Farm, Quarryville R 2, with the junior champion;
Maurice Welk, Quarryville R 2, with reserve champion; and Paul Welk, Peach
Bottom, with the grand champion.
