126—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Septembers, 1977 Sisters show Cumberland Co. 4-H hog champions CARLISLE, Pa. - Sisters, Christine and Sandy Hopple, the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hopple, Mechanicsburg H 2, showed their animals to the champion and reserve champion titles of the Cumberland County 4-H Swine Show and Sale held on August 23 at the Carlisle Livestock Market. Thirty-six members exhibited and sold a total of 123 pigs. Christine Hopple exhibited the grand champion hog, a 275 pound Yorkshire cross. The animal was sold to Hatfield Packing Company, Hatfield, Pa. for $2.08 per pound. The reserve champion, a 260 pound Yorkshire cross exhibited by Sandy Hopple sold for $1.20 per pound to the Country Butcher Shop, Carlisle R 4. The champion trio was shown by Kirby Spahr of NewviUe R 1 and auctioned off to Hatfield Packing Company. The champion pair, exhibited by Jeff Miller of Carlisle . RB, was pur chased Tuesday evening by Pennsylvania Packing Company of Philadelphia. The 123 market hogs sold had an average weight of 228 pounds. The sale average price, including the champions was 56.8 cents per pound, and excluding champions averaged 54.8 cents per pound. A total weight of 28,000 pounds of market hogs grossed $15,896.33 for 36 4-H club members. In addition to the cham pion and the champion trio, Hatfield Packing Company purchased 27 hogs. The other leading buyer was Penn sylvania Packing Company who purchased 30 hogs in addition to the Champion Pair. Richard Zimmerman of Plainfield was the suc cessful bidder on 13 head, while Robert Finkenbinder, the Country Butcher Shop, was named buyer of the reserve champion plus nine other hogs. The 4-H champion market hog of Cumberland County was purchased by Hatfield Packing Company, Hatfield, Pa., from Christine Hopple, 4-H member from Mechanicsburg, Pa. Other sucessful bidders at the spirited 4-H pig sale were Potties Auction, NewviUe RDI, Eberts Paints, Carlisle; Ernest Shover Farm Equipment, Carlisle; Charles Meyers, Lancaster; Shomokin Packing Co., Shamokin; Baum’s Boloney, Elizabethtown; R. E. Hershey Meats; Fred Potteiger, Carlisle RDB; Clark’s Packing Co., and Knisely’s Agricultural Center, Carlisle. The show was judged by Ronald Trostle of Red Lion RD2.
