September 3,1977 118 Franklin Co. holds dairy show CHAMBERSBURG - The twentieth annual Franklin County 4-H Dairy club Roundup was held August 23 at the Franklin County Fairgrounds. There were 165 animals exhibited by ap proximately 145 4-H dairy club members representing seven county dairy clubs. Included in the show were 128 Holsteins, 3 Jerseys, and 34 Guernseys. Ray Emig, of Ship pensburg, was the judge placing each of the animals on their quality of con firmation. During the course of the show, each exhibitor was judged on his or her ability to show and fit his or her animal. Those exhibitors who did an outstanding job of fitting and showing their animal were given a master fitter or master showman award. The judge for the showing and fitting contest was Duane Duncan, County Agent for Cumberland County. The 1977 Grand Champion Showman was Wayne Helman, Chambersburg, R 2. Steven Eckstine, Mer cersburg, R 2, was picked Soybean farmers don’t agree with government statistics LOUISVILLE, Ky. - An informal poll of votmg delegates at the American Soybean Association con vention here earlier this month indicates these producers have increased their soybean acreage only 10.3 per cent over last year. That figure is in sharp contrast with USDA’s most recent soybean acreage report, which indicated a 17 per cent increase nation wide. Delegates to the two-day convention passed a con troversial resolution calling for additional delivery points for soybeans in Chicago Board of Trade contracts. They also adopted a Wickus Lum' ,iur ’ Grand Champion Fitter. The trophies for the fitting and showing champions were donated by C.V. Coop, and Sire Power, Inc. First place animals were: Jersey Intermediate Calf - Steve Meyers, St. Thomas; Senior Calf - Cindy Donough, Chambersburg; Junior Yearling - Melody A. Ocker, Chambersburg. Guernsey Junior Calf and Senior Calf - Jeffrey D. Benedict, Waynesboro; Intermediate Calf - Douglas Layman, Waynesboro; Junior Yearling and Senior Yearling - Waynesboro; 2 Years Old - John W. Mummert, Chambersburg; 3 and 4 Years Olds and 5 Years and Older Classes - Patricia Layman, Waynesboro. Holstein Junior Calf - Douglas Fahrney, Waynesboro; Intermediate Calf - Jan Horst, Chambersburg; Senior Calf - Wayne Helman, Chambersburg; Junior Yearling - Craig Woodring, Chambersburg; Senior Yearling - Kirk Chrstman, strongly worded resolution opposing U.S. government backed palm oil loans to countries that produce palm oil for export. The resolution pointed out that, despite government assurances to the contrary, “the U.S. government and in ternational lending in stitutions have continued to approve such loans at in terest rates substantially lower than commercial rates... Sixty-four million dollars’ worth of palm oil loans were granted to edible oil exporting countries in the first half of 1977 alone.” About 1,700 persons from 30 states attended the con vention.
