Judge for the show was
Henry Gruber, head of
livestock procurement, from
Arbogast and Bastian, Inc.,
Allentown. Gruber stated
that he felt the Lancaster
County show was an out
standing show filled with
energetic 4-H’ers who were
excellent contestants. He

desperate need for lime kept
running through his mind.
Early Sunday morning,
through the efforts of Curtis
Thompson, a truckload of 9%
tons of hydrated lime was
loaded onto a truck donated
by Marlin Flaharty, Service
Feed and Supply Co., of
Delta, and rushed to the
flood site.
Thompson and Flaharty,
accompanied by Dale
Stewart, Delta Rl, delivered
the donated lime through
arrangements by Union
Lutheran Church, York,
center for volunteer relief
efforts in York County. They
were cleared ahead of time
by Civil Defense and
directed to the Calvary
Lutheran Church in John
stown.
An Army detachment of
600 men from the Wilkes-
Barre area was in the
stricken city for cleanup
efforts. The military per
sonnel immediately began
unloading the lime-laden
truck and transferring the
materials to military
vehicles, which then moved
it into nearby areas when it
was most needed.
“They wouldn’t even let us
help unload it,” marvelled
Flaharty.
Other cleanup tools, such
as buckets, boots, shovels
and gloves went to the
church for distribution to
personnel working from that
relief center.
“Actually, the load is only
showmen who knew how to
show their pigs and would be
hard to beat in the future.
The animals, he believed,
were excellent in quality
throughout the classes.
In the fitting and
showmanship contests, the
junior winner was Michelle
Dean, Strasburg, an 11 year
old first year member of a
pig club. Senior winner was
Bernadine Gish,
Elizabethtown, who has won
the county fitting contest five
times. She is a 17 year old
member of* the
Elizabethtown *Pig and
Rabbit Club.
' Complete results of the
show follow:
about half paid for,”
Flaharty admitted.
Thompson, Stewart and
other area dairy farmers
from Delta, as well as the
Cardiff and Whiteford,
Maryland, sections, set up
an impromptu telephone
grid last weekend to gather
monetary donations and
support toward funding the
shipment.
“Donated by Dairymen of
York County” was noted on
some of the bags of lime
carried by the truck on its
mission of mercy.
Upon the delivery and visit
to the Johnstown disaster
site, the dairymen resolved
to continue support of the
efforts to send lime and
other cleanup articles
needed.
A fund has been
established, headed by
Thompson, to supply flood
relief materials to as great
an extent as donations will
allow.
“We’ve made no com
mitments, but we’d sure like
to continue what’s been
started,” added Flaharty.
“We decided from the start
to send that first load, even if
we had to foot the bill our
selves.”
