And the decision was made for Gail Snyder of New Tripoli, Rl, to become the 1977 Polled Hereford Queen. Her duties as queen consist mainly of handing out rib bons at shows and doing her best to promote the breed of Polled Herefords. She keeps actively involved with the breed, living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Er nest D. Snyder, on a 150 acre beef and hog farm. Right now there are about 50 head of cattle on the farm. Being Hereford queen, however, is not Gail’s only activity. She is an active member of many 4-H clubs, including the Lehigh Co. Baby Beef Club, where serving as treasurer, the Lehigh Co. Sheep Club, holding office as vice president, the Germansville Happy Homemakers, being president, and is an active member of the 4-H livestock judging team. She has been involved in 4-H work for about nine years. She has both a Polled Hereford steer and heifer for AND As Pa. Polled Hereford Queen, Gail shows. Besides being active in 4- H, she is also involved in many activites at Nor thwestern Lehigh High School where she is a senior. She is a member of the band color guard, the National Honor Society and the Student Council. She is also a member of the Ebenezer United Church of Christ, in New Tripoli, where she sometimes plays the organ. Gail has lived on the farm all her life and says she loves it. Cats, sheep, and cattle are her favorite animals and one of her favorite parts of farm work is working with the animals. Most of her time during the summer is spent working with her 4-H projects. Then they are trained to stand squarely and walk, and their coats are washed and the hair trained to brush just right. Gail estimates that she spends approximately an hour a day working with her steer and heifer, between walking and grooming it. When thinking of her future plans, Gail thinks she would like to go to college and study agriculture, perhaps at a school like Penn State. She wants to stay close to the farm life in her vocation, possibly working for the Extension service. Asked how she became so involved with livestock and animals, Gail said she was influenced by her brother, Greg, and her parents. “Besides,” she added, smiling, “it’s very hard to live on a farm and not get involved.” 49
