mastqrials for the crunchy
chips are unhappy with the
.price being paid for the
spuds, which are just now
beginning to come out of the
ground.
York County potatoes are
expected to be of excellent
chipping quality this year,
because of the dry growing
conditions. The dryness
causes a solid, low-moisture
flesh which will yield greater
volumes of chips after the
flying process. One grower
has reported that area
potatoes are producing 25
pounds of finished chips for
each hundred pounds of
potatoes used.
Egg report
available
PARK RIDGE, HI. - A
definite interest in U.S. eggs
has been reported by con
sultants to the American
Egg Board after visiting
Egypt and Teheran, Iran.
The purpose of the trip,
which included exhibiting at
Mideast Trade Fairs, was to
learn and report on export
problems and possibilities
for U.S. eggs and spent fowl.
The main limiting factor in
the exportation of eggs,
according to the report, is
the freight rates. Transit
time was not expected to be a
problem.
The consultants reported
that the market is
predominantly for white
eggs with little interest in
dried egg products or canned
poultry products.
Interested organizations
may receive a copy of the
complete, report and be
placed on a mailing list for
export information by
contacting: American Egg
Board, Export Development
Committee, 205 Touhy, Park
Ridge, HI. 60068.

Southern states and
Eastern Shore potatoes,
though, are cutting into the
local markets. And, while
area growers are reporting
record costs of anywhere
from to $l2OO per acre of
delivered potatoes, buyers
are paying only $3.50 per
hundredweight. That’s
already down 50 cents from
last year’s early season
price.
“Prices are set by supply
"and demand,” stated
Francis Shive, potato buyer
fotLElGe Potato Chip Co.,
Inc., of York, when
questioned by growers about
price-setting policies.

will accept a truckload of
potatoes for processing, the
grower must bring a-sample
of the crop to be tested lor'
specific gravity, which in
dicates potato moisture.
There is no price differential
offered for varying grades of
potato quality.
If potatoes will not “chip,”
the other alternative is to sell
them to a food processing
plant for “french frying.”
“And the price you get for
those depends on just how
badly a fellow wants to get
rid of that truckload of
potatoes; they might give
you $2.00 per hun
dredweight,” wryly con
cluded Bacon.
