Chester County’s
4-H’ers
in dress
By JOANNE SPAHR
PARKESBURG, Pa. -
Fifty-nine young seam
stresses representing 12 4-H
sewing clubs from Chester
County gathered at the
Pakesburg Baptist Church
on July 15 for an evaluation
of their Summer projects
and with the hope that they
might be one of nine girls
chosen to go onto regional
dress revue competition at
the Lehigh Valley Mall in
Allentown on July 22.
Speaking to the audience
prior to the naming of the
nine young women chosen to
go onto further competition,
Valerie J. Peoples, Chester
County Extension home
economist, stressed the fact
that “These girls don’t wake
up in the morning with the
knowledge of how to sew a
garment properly,” and that
dedication of members,
leaders, and parents,
combined, helped the 4-H’ers
in their accomplishments.
She also reminded those
present that all girls taking
part in the review were
winners, although only six
senior 4-H members and
three junior members could
go on to attend regional
competition.
The six seniors chosen
were: Wendy Davis,
Downingtown Rl; Beverly
Hershey, Cochranville Rl;
Dawn Krapf, Downingtown
Rl; Nadine Prange,
Cochranville Rl; Susan
Windle, Coatesville R 3; and
JoAnn Wyatt, West Grove.
Miss Davis’s outfit was
a flowered cotton sundress
with a flared skirt stitched to
a fitted bodice. It featured a
back button closing, patched
pockets, and a ruffled bot
tom and shoulder straps in
matching material. Miss
Davis, who is 16 years old, is
a member of the East
Brandywine 4-H club.

Club, made a two piece
green plaid wool blend outfit
featuring a skirt and a lined
vest with princess seaming
and a V neckline. Miss
Windle also made covered
buttons to match the outfit.
To finish the ensemble, she
wore a cream colored, long
sleeved blouse with a tie
front.
A dark green chiffon and
gabardine gown accented
with chiffon long sleeves and
gabardine cuffs earned
JoAnn Wyatt the status of
competing in regionals. The
Avondale 4-H’er’s gown
featured a low rounded
neckline.
Senior winners from the Chester County dress
revue were: (left to right) JoAnn Wyatt, Avondale
