Summer classes
[Continued from Page 51]
“I’m learning quite a bit
from this Summer’s
tutoring, and I definitely
have plans to run the camp
next year, but probably in a
modified fashion,” she ex
plains.
At present, she tutors the
four children once a week on
Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. at the farm and then
visits each child individually
on Thursdays.
Along with her tutoring
and teaching occupations,
Mrs. Fry also sells herb
breads and vinegar as a
sideline. She makes all of her
products from her herb
garden and dries and
packages her produce at the
end of the Summer, as well.
One other project she

with pieces of antique fur
niture and dishes which she
has collected at sales. Her
favorite dish is of the Moon
and Star design.
“I used to go the sales a
lot,” she says, “but I don’t go
that much anymore. But,
when I do, I don’t go without
money, I can tell you that!”
she says with a laugh.
And, while she aspires to
making hand woven curtains
for her home, so far she has
only gotten around to
wearing place mats on her
loom.
“I took a course with the
Extension Service, but it
takes more than one little
course on weaving to be able
to make drapes,” she
chuckles.
Gardening is also a hobby
of Mrs. Butler’s. She par
ticularly enjoys Cannas,
Dahlias, and Calla Lillies,
the majority of which have to
be taken out of the ground in

the Fall.
Along with her herb
garden, she also has an old
fashioned German kitchen
garden from which she does
her own canning and
freezing.
“I never buy vegetables,”
she says. She also makes all
her own bread.
So, her four students, and
hopefully more next Sum

new and exciting ‘‘lesson”
from this teacher-naturalist.

“I love flowers,” she
exclaims, but she admits to
not knowing the prices of
several of her plants such as
her boxwoods, because she
has always started them
from her own plants, and not
purchased them in a store.
She has also been a leader
of 4-Hfor about 24 years, and
is presently teaching the Mt.
Joy sewing 4-H club. This
club has over 100 members
and is held every Tuesday
from 9 to 11 a.m.
And, one other chore she
has to do which she doesn't
consider a hobby, is
collecting eggs. Her husband
Lewis and her son Jay are in
partnership together on a
168-acre dairy and poultry
farm. On that farm, Mrs.
Bixler's job is to gather the
eggs from their 12000 layers.
So, combining her hobbies
and talents, Mrs. Bixler is a
busy woman who likes to
keep busy with “something
new to do” at all times.
