—Lancaster Farming. Saturday, July 16, 1977 112 Grocery prices HARHISBUPG - A four month survey of super market prices by the Penn sylvania Department of Agriculture reveals that a sample of “shopping bag” items jumped $l.Ol across the Commonwealth, Secretary Kent Shelhamer disclosed last week. “We all know that the prices of these staple items have been slowly heading upward,” said Shelhamer. “Coffee alone accounts for over half of the increase in cost. But the survey also shows up that consumers shopping in urban super markets are getting a better break than shoppers in rural areas, and namebrand items are generally the most ex pensive on supermarket shelves.” The survey, conducted by the Department's Bureau of Rural Affairs, checked the prices of 15 shopping bag items in both rural and ur ban stores from November 1976 to Februray 1977. Shelhamer said that the survey was intended to provide consumers with retail food price information. According to the survey, prices rose continuously throughout the four-month period, from $9.90 in November to 10.91 in February. The four-month Cattle program planned LANCASTER, Pa. - “Yield Grades” will be the subject of a combined meeting and demonstration to be held in the Auction barn at the Lancaster Stockyards Inc. on July 28 at 9:30 a.m. Topics that will be discussed include: “Are they really worth less?”, “Why yield grades?” and “Demonstration - various yield grades of cattle”. The northeast also recorded the highest monthly average of $11.27 in February. The $10.23 average in the southwest central region was the lowest four-month shopping bag average, while the lowest monthly average of $9.76 was found in the north-central region in November. Shelhamer acknowledged that the shopping bag cost more in rural stores, but said that throughout the four month period, the gap was closing. Savings for urban shoppers in November were 60 cents or six per cent. By February, the difference between urban and rural stores was 48 cents or 4.5 per cent. ' The four-month average of $10.69 in rural stores compares to an urban supermarket average of $10,17, a five per cent savings if goods are pur chased in urban stores. Shelhamer said that during the same survey period, “We found that the cost of selected Storebrand items averaged 9.2 per cent below the cost of namebrand items.” During November and December, the savings from Philadelphia, and a USDA marketing service representative will lead the programs. In the demon stration, several head of cattle representing each of the five yield grades will be exhibited. The purpose of this program is to furnish market information that will permit producers to market their cattle when they reach the proper grade, and make the most efficient use of feed and other inputs. continue to rise from purchase of Storebrand a change of more than two products was a full ten per cents from November to cent, from a sample of nine February.
