Tourists love Lane. Co. farms By KENDACE BORRY “Beautiful!” “Fantastic!” “Everything is so green!” These were just a few of the comments from tourists visitng Lancaster County this past week. They were describing the farmland that they had seen in their travels throughout the county and they all had something nice to say. Summer is the busy season for tourists to come and visit this gardenspot of the world. They come from all over the country and even from outside the country to view the Amish, sample shoo-fly pie, and visit the country markets to mention just a few of their many varied activities. Refreshments by the Stevens Fire Company. reported that this is their fourth year that they’ve visited Lancaster County. Each year they return because of the cleanliness of the area and the hospitality of the people. Each year they find more places to visit, and more things to do. From North Miami Beach, Fla. Steven Roth and his wife were impressed with the hex signs and the contour far ming. The land here is much hillier than where they live, and there, everyone just “plows and plants in long straight rows.” They found this area a very interesting and pretty area to visit. Alec and Isabelle Ferguson of Kingsville, Ontario, are visiting Lan caster area for a few days to see if the Pennsylvania Wood Chest Amish are very different from the Amish that live nearby them. They found both Amish sects to be very similar in the fact that they had no electricity, drove buggies, and seemed to have large families. They liked the contour farming, the big bams and the huge houses. They also commented that all the farm buildings seemed so well built and solid. Jim Greiner from upper state New York loved the Amish people. He thought it was just fantastic the Amish can live “without the society extras that we all seem to think we need”. Amish life reminds him of his Ife style as a boy and he would be very happy to go back to living in that way. Another group of tourists from Virginia and North Carolina thought the flowers they had seen looked so pretty and green. The farms here seem bigger with more hills and they were very interested in the tobacco. Tobacco is grown in their area but it is a lot bigger and different than the variety grown here. Jeff Fedilla, of Attleboro, Mas., claimed that the windmills “were out of sight”. The size of the farms amazed him, they were so huge. He thought the Amish had a great way of living but he worried that the clothes might get too hot over the Summer months. “Now I know what ‘com grows tall’ means,” stated the Steinmetz’ from Rich field, N.J. “Here the com does grow tall...and beautiful... and quiet... and g00d..." And from Northwale, N. J., the George Cohn family comes to visit often on weekends. They find this area a lot greener, more wide open, and cleaner. The boys were impressed by “all the com!”. The couple from Scranton, Pa., find Lancaster County a nice spot to have a vacation close to home. They chose here because it’s very Lancaster Farming, Saturday. Jul; The Jeff Fedilla family from Attleboro, Mass., are visiting Lancaster County for the second time because they like the area so much. They par ticularly like the huge, “monstrous” farms that they've seen. beautiful, cleaner, and more is the Amish in their natural roomy. setting, and we hate to see Finally, a family from the naturalness disappear,” Fishkill, N.Y., noted that (hey stated, while they loved the area The tourists travelled on they did feel it was getting their men-y ways, visiting too commercial.
