Weller wins state award in FFA proficiency program
MORGANTOWN, Pa. -
Dean E, Waller, the 18-year
old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Mervin Weller of Morgan
town, has been named the
winner of the state
Agricultural Electrification
Proficiency award. This
award is one of 16 such first
place honors presented by
the National FFA Foun
dation, Inc., and which will
go on to regional com
petition.
The majority of the
electrification award
selection is based on the
candidate’s degree of in
volvement and achievement
directly related to electrical
improvements around the
home and farm.

WOODSTOWN, N.J. - The
highlight of the July 4th
weekend rodeo at Cowtown
was a “two event” man from
Woodstown, N.J., Stanley
Thomas, who was tops in the
bare back event. The judges
awarded his a mark of 59,
which won him 1138.76.
Brothers Andy and Grant
Harris, Cowtown, were in
competition in the bull
riding. Andy’s ride for a
score of 72 put him in
position for the first prize of
1205.80. Grant came in third
in that event, but was first in
the saddle bronc event with a
68 and took home $119.56 for
his effort. His total money
for the evening came to
$222.46.
Joe Merola of Penns
Grove, N.J., who roped and
tied a calf in 16.6 seconds,
won the top money for the
evening at $225.40.

project that he was involved
in was the designing and
installing of an electrical
system for a silo unloader,
silage conveyor, and feeder
presently used on the farm.
Weiler has also assisted in
wiring his home basement,
the ventiliation system in the
swine farrowing house, and
an elevator for more ef
ficient movement of corn.
A second basis of selection
for the proficiency award
was Weiler’s leadership
'abilities. An active member
of the Grassland FFA
chapter, he has served as
president of the ninth grade
lead as top barrel racer.
Over 2500 people were on
hand to watch the 87 con*
testants pit their skills
against the animals and the
clock for their share of the
$2700 purse.

Fanner recipient and at
tended the 1976 National
FFA Convention.
A third area of con
sideration for the proficiency
award was the school and
community activities in
which the candidate par
ticipated. Weiler is a
member of the Churchtown
Mennonite Church and youth
group, where he has served
as church secretary.
At Garden Spot High
School, he has been a
member of the National
Honor Society and school
orchestra. This Winter, he
was a member of the school
varsity wrestling team, and
