resources that include large
contiguous areas well
watered, with rich soil,
within the temperate zone.
But it is just as true that we
have in the United States a
tremendous production and
marketing system - based
on able and well educated
farmers, good tran
sportation systems, and a
hundred years of building
institutions for research,
marketing, price reporting,
grading, handling, quality
control, and other services.
“American agriculture is
built primarily on a system
of family farmers who make
their own production
decisions based on their
resources, abilities, and
desires. Our marketing
system is also diversified,
privately operated, and
highly competitive - a
system that has made it
possible for the United States
to be flexible and responsive
in meeting export demand.
“In recent years, the
United States has provided
around half of all the grain
moving in world trade. IWs
grain has been provided in a
wide variety of kinds,
grades, moisture, and
protein content - whatever
