Goats gaining ground
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN -
The dairy goat is making a
name for herself in
Pennsylvania. To date, there
are several hundred herds in
the state. More than 200 goat
herds are registered with the
American Dairy
Association. Pure Goat
Products, a commercial
dairy in Boyerstown,
handles goat products
exclusively. Nine
Pennsylvania goat herds are
licensed by the state to sell
raw milk. Goats’ milk is
white and easier to digest
than that of cows’ milk. This
is especially important for
infants, elderly people, and
people with weak stomachs.
Goats’ milk is also highly
nutritious. It contains many
essential nutrients needed by
the body. In fact to get the
nutrients supplied by one
quart of goats’ milk one
would have to eat the
following amounts of food:
one pound of lean beef steak,
one pound of chicken, one
and two-thirds pounds of
peas, eight eggs, seven
oranges, three and one-fifth
pounds of codfish, five
pounds of spinach, three and
one-half pounds of oysters,
six tomatoes and six
bananas.
During the Summer
months, hundreds of goats
will be shown at fairs and
goat shows throughout the
state. At last year’s Spotlight
Sale, sponsored by the
American Dairy Goat
Association, the top selling
goat was a seven month old

Secretary Kent Shelhamer,
whose department ad
ministers the state Dog
Law, today issued a call for
public attention to a
“hearing dog” program for
the deaf which was brought
to Pennsylvania in early
June by the Women’s SPCA
of Pennsylvania in
cooperation with the
American Humane
Association.
Under the program,’
Shelhamer said, dogs are
trained to respond to such
sounds as the ringing or buzz
of an alarm clock, the cry of
a baby, smoke alarm
signals, door bells and
knocks, and even the
stealthy sounds made by
prowlers. When altered, the
dogs will make physical
contact with their masters
and lead them to the source
of the sounds.
Shelhamer said the
