Newcastle disease,
especially the recent
introduction of this
devastating disease in cage
birds, was the principal topic
of concern to the Advisory
Committee on Poultry
Health of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
The committee,

the pet, fancy, and
commercial poultry
industries, urged the
Department to take every
possible action to gain the
cooperation of the public and
the bird industries in
preventing the smuggling of
possibly diseased birds into
the U.S.
The committee met May 12
and 13 at the Hyattsville,
Md., offices of USDA’s
Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service (APHIS).
Among recommendations
made by the committee
were:
-USDA initiate a national
cooperative program to
eradicate mycoplasmosis for
all poultry. This bacterial
disease is being eliminated
from broiler and turkey
flocks to prevent
transmission through
hatcheries.
-USDA cooperate with
States to develop avian

eradicate lethal influenza
viruses from poultry and
other avian species.
--USDA continue
cooperative efforts with the
rare bird industry to identify
birds moving in interstate
commerce.
-USDA consider possible
methods of providing for
birds and hatching eggs to be
moved safely from areas
under quarantine for avian
diseases.
--USDA explore the
possibility of eradicating
exotic Newcastle disease
from Puerto Rico and
working with Mexico to
control poultry diseases.
Finally, the committee
urged USDA to request funds
to improve present
programs to prevent the
spread of avian diseases.

and calf-care at birth along
with early calf nutrition are
discussed, along with calf
housing and equipment, the
eight steps for developing
calves into better cows and
calf health and disease
prevention.
