LANCASTER - Eleven spring conference of the
Lancaster County DHIA Southeastern Pennsylvania
supervisors received the 1976 DHIA Supervisors held at
“Award of Merit” several Bird-In-Hand,

Sheep dwindling
As in every year since
1960, the U.S. sheep and
lamb population dwindled
again in 1976. As of January
1, 1977, there were an
estimated 12.7 million of
these animals on American
farms, 5 per cent fewer than
a year earlier and 12 per cent
below the 1975 count. The

caster County held its second
meeting on April 11 at the
Farm and Home Center,
Lancaster. At this meeting
-wo educational movies were
shown, after which a
suggestion was made that
the Lancaster County dairy
clubs, which are now
arranged by breeds, become
area dairy clubs in
corporating all breeds. This
would save members from
extra traveling to meetings.
Other dairy clubs in the
county are thinking about
the change.

meet these qualifications:
Two years service as of
January 1, 1977; have
worked a minimum of 20
days per month for the year;
attended two conferences
held during the year;
maintain an average mailing
time not over 2.9 days for the
year and test not over three
per cent of their herds
outside of the centering day.
In addition to meeting the
above qualifications, a
supervisor must be
recommended by his county
board of directors to receive
the award. The final
recommendation is based on
completeness and accuracy
of records, appearance of
supervisor and cooperation
with agents, directors,
members and other
supervisors.

Meat production up
HARRISBURG - Red meat
production in Pennsylvania
during March 1977 totaled
94.9 million pounds, up eight
per cent from a year earlier
according to the Crop
Reporting Service.
Cattle slaughter at 85,800
head was up two per cent
from March 1976; hogs at
264,500 head were up 21 per
cent; sheep and lambs at
12,200 head were up 12 per
cent; but calves at 33,600
head were down 14 per cent
from a year ago.
Nationally, commercial
red meat production in
March 1977 totaled 3.5 billion
pounds, up one per cent from
