The moment I had been waiting for
was at hand. The sun was shining.
The air was calm. It was warm enough
to peel my shirt off and enjoy the
weather while doing some painting.
Normally a paint brush was
something l‘d rather stay away from,
but this was different. This was like a
craftsman putting his signature on a
piece of merchandise he was proud
of.
Several days earlier I had finished
putting up a board fence, which my
sister, Hilke, then painted for me. The
boards were white, while the posts
were dark green. Now it was time for
me to print the lettering on the
boards facing the driveway.
After penciling the letters to their
proper positions and sizes, I carefully
applied the black paint. The black
letters stood out well against the
fresh white paint. The birds sang an
accompaniment to the special
feelings of satisfaction I was ex
periencing as the letters were taking
shape.

STAUFFER
J*\ ■» BE U T The most carefully engineered tractor in the world.
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 16.1977
Done with one side of the fence, I
stepped back to the road to see how it
looked. It was crucial that the let
tering be straight and even. Satisfied
with the results, I duplicated the
message on the fence along the
opposite side of the driveway.
Thereafter, anyone passing by in
either direction would know that this
was the home of LICHTENHOF
Registered Holstems. Established
nine years earlier when I purchased
my first cow with money earned from
a paper route, my herd was the
source of considerable satisfaction to
me. That was especially true during
the Spring months when I could
watch the cows graze on lush
pastures and take pride in their rising
production. The herd was like a
painting is to an artist, or a splendid
building to an architect or a ship to a
captain.
The bright sunny day reflected my
inner feelings that day when the
name "Lichtenhof" went on the
boards.
