Lancaster Farming, Saturday. April 16,1977 Straw can be suitable feed UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Straw treated with sodium hydroxide and supplemented with urea nitrogen can be used successfully in feeding cattle and sheep, ex periments at Penn State Univeristy have found. The findings were reported during Livestock Day held earlier this year. Treating straw with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide breaks the chemical bond between cellulose and lignin, making the cellulose digestible, according to Hong Suk Park, graduate assistant in animal science. Fed a ration of 50 per cent treated straw and urea supplement, lambs showed considerably more weight gains per day than lambs fed any other ration containing straw. Weight gains of these animals, averaging one-half pound per day, were ex ceeded only by lambs fed a standard ration of grain mixture and alfalfa hay. When the animals were fed a ration containing 75 per cent treated straw , they still gained one-third of a pound per day. Laboratory analysis showed that 86 per cent of the cellulose in alkali-treated straw was digestible compared with only 41 per cent of the cellulose in up treated straw. Protein synthesis from non-protein nitrogen in the animal’s rumen or first stomach was also increased by the alkali treatment. Park said large worldwide quantities of straw, could be important in nutrition of cud- PUBLIC SALE OF 275 HEAD OF LIVESTOCK Located 5 miles north of Chambersburg, Pa., and 5 miles south of Shippensburg, Pa., on Route 11. A native of Korea, Park hopes to apply his findings to animal feeding projects in his home country. He indicated alkali-treated straw is used in mos* European countries. In Denmark and England, the treated straw is stored in silos or is made into cubes or briquettes. The experiments used 35 wether lambs for 42 days in the mid Summer of 1976. The lambs were divided into groups of seven by weight. Two groups were fed either treated or untreated straw as 50 per cent of the ration. Another two groups were fed either treated or untreated straw as 75 per cent of the ration. Producing alkali-treated straw for animal feed is a growing business in coun tries such as Denmark, England, Australia, and parts of Africa, it was stated. Some companies process the treated straw into cubes or briquettes at the rate of four tons per hour. Liming acid soils will increase the yields of grasses and legumes and improve their quality. Many of the failures associated with these crops may be caused by the lack of lime. Farm Equipment 39
