Four vo-ag teachers,
several co-op represen
tatives, and Lancaster
County Agent Jay Irwin
conducted the 5-hour in
stitute. Activities included
the showing of a film and
slides, remarks by previous
winners, a “Co-op Bowl,”
and a quiz on cooperatives.
Irwin explained that the
cooperative way of doing
business is not taught in high
schools, even though it is a
very important aspect of
American agriculture. The
purpose of the institute, is to
introduce students to that
form of business and to
refine leadership qualities.
Jess Erway, vo-ag teacher
from Manheim Central High
School, had high praise for
the program, exclaiming
that more such activities
should be made available to
young people. He en
' couraged the teenagers to
strive for achievement with
enthusiasm. “Don’t forget,
whatever you put into
something, is exactly what
you get out,” he lectured. His
students won the “Co-op
Bowl,” in which the young
adults were tested on their
knowledge of the cooperative
way of doing business.
