Shellenberger, associate professor of dairy science reported on ex periments he conducted using sour colostrum as a starter feed for young calves. “The excess colostrum produced during the first days following freshening in most cases will feed a calf for 17 days,” Shellenberger emphasized. “In order to save this valuable calf feed, we worked on a system to store it and make it available for new-born calves over a period of time."
