York County beekeepers review
important points of business
By JOYCE BUPP
York Co. Reporter
YORK, Pa. - A panel
discussion designed to ad
vise both old and new
beekeepers was the
highlight on the March 25
meeting of the York County
Beekeepers Association.
Panel members were
Raymond Brothers, Nelson
Brenneman, Earl Miller,
and Eugene Shoemaker,
with Russell Wentz serving
as the moderator.
“How do you get started in
beekeeping?" was the first
question put to the four ex
perienced beekeepers, and it
brough forth a variety of
answers. Suggested ways to
get in the business are to
purchase packaged bees or
established hives, collect
swarms and make your own
equipment. Members
generally agreed that it is
easiest and cheapest to
purchase from someone
going out of business.
Equipment can be made
more inexpensively than
bought, but care must be
taken to build to standard
dimensions so that parts will
be interchangeable.
The proper way to collect a
swarm of bees includes the
necessary equipment to
prevent being stung.
Protective garments and the
use of a smoker are
recommended. Prepare a
hive for the swarm with
drawn comb and honey or
sugar syrup. After hiving the
swarm, it should be left there
until after dark, to assure
getting all the bees; then
close and move the hive to its
permanent location.
Panelists emphasized

double-checking to make
sure the queen is with the
swarm and suggest that a
smoker can be used to great
advantage in doing so.
The inevitable question of
getting stung by bees was
then given to panel mem
bers. They felt that stinging
does not occur nearly as
often as people expect.
Emergency treatments if it
does happen include ap
plication of a baking soda
paste or applying meat
tenderizer, followed by ice,
and a 15-minute rest period.
Stingers should be removed
by brushing skin gently or
scraping the area lightly
with the fingernail. Pulling
the stinger by grasping it
between the fingers will only
force the venom from £he
stinger sac into the
surrounding tissue and make
the wound more painful.
A few simple rules will
help prevent most stings. Do
not wear soiled or odor
containing clothing. Do not
use perfumes, hairsprays,
after-shave lotion,' etc.
before tending bees or
coming into contact with
them. Do not tend bees after
contact with animals
because bees dislike animal
odors. Avoid wearing woolen
or dark clothing. Work the
bees on a warm, sunny, calm
day, and work slowly with
them. Use the smoker, but do
not overdo, because too
much smoke will agitate the
bees.
The beekeepers all agreed
that locating the hives to a
southern exposure is best,
but some felt that hives
should have all-day sun,
while others locate their
hives for short periods of
shade daily.
Supplemental feedings are
needed during the Spring
brood rearing season, as well
as ip the Fall if weather
changes too rapidly and fall
supplies are short. The Fall
feeding was emphasized,
because it may decide .
whether the hive survives a
severe Winter.
Old hives must be
carefully prepared for new
colonies; they must be clean
and free from disease. Check
carefully to be sure that the
wax moth has not invaded
the comb.

Pastures okay
for heifers
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
- - Dairy heifers will main
tain a normal growth rate on
pasture without receiving
supplemental feed, ac
cording to experiments
conducted at Penn State
University.
An alfalfa-orchardgrass
mixture seems to be well
suited as a summer feed for
heifers. It provides the
necessary protein and
requires little or no fer
tilization to maintain.
