—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 9, 1977 96 Love wants embrace for cooperatives By LAUREL SCHAEFFER Berks County Reporter ONO, Pa. - Members of the Myerstown Local, Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative gathered at the Ono Fire Hall recently to listen to Freebum Love, marketing representative of the cooperative. Love reminded the con cerned dairymen of the' above normal increase in mild production now faced by all producers, and how important cooperatives are in finding markets for this milk. “Cooperatives need yor support,” he told the dairymen. We have markets for your milk but they are becoming harder to find, the speaker continued. To combat this situation the cooperative has baken over the Middlebury Center processing plant for use in ‘distress’ situations. The plant may be in a poor geographic for hauling, but because of this the cooperative has been able to purchase the plant for a ‘distress’ price, Love in formed the area producers. “The plant will insure an outlet for om milk.” he ex plained. The speaker also voiced concern over the federal governments move to in crease the milk support price. “I’m afraid this move will come back to haunt us in the future,” Love exclaimed. It will only compound the problems we are already facing, he added. The government has substantial supplies of milk on hand now. They have two times as much cheese, three times as much powder, and more butter stockpiled than they did one year ago. Add this to the misconceptions in the recent news releases about the increases in the price of milk and our situation becomes next to impossible, Love told the local producers. The cooperative should not tolerate any producer who won’t produce top quality milk. Let them go to a manufacturer on their own, he continued. Milk is a very perishable product and it is easy to produce milk that does not come up th standards. The market for this milk is very limited, the dairymen were remindedi The cooperative has a difficult time marketing top quality milk at this time as it is, the representative added. Producers were told they have a requirement to be in compliance with the USDA grading standards. In closing, Love stressed the need for more adequate bonding for milk handlers. Love gave the dairymen an account of a dairy which recently went bankrupt. He pointed out how adequate bonding would have helped the situation more. Bonding would make our job easier, “lam glad to see Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board is backing legislation to that effect,” Love concluded.
