What a backbreaking job
gardening is! Strawberries
must be weeded, flowers
transplanted, and seeds
planted. Everything is on
ground level and it seems as
though we haven’t lessened'
the labor in this area for
hundreds of years. I and my
trowel and trusty hoe are all
that stand between a clean
garden and a weedy one.
Now kitchens are somethig
else. They really have
changed and have lightened
women’s work. When we
moved on this farm some 20
years ago, I had to walk
down to the far corner of the
yard where the pump was
located. After I pumped a
bucket of water, I carried it
up the hill, heated it on a
wood stove and then washed
the dishes, diapers or
whatever. Now hot water is
mine in an instant (if the
furnace doesn’t breakdown).

There is a garbage
disposal in the sink and no
need to run outside in nasty
weather to toss the peels
over the back fence. There is
a specially built “baking
center” with everthing
within easy reach. There is a
hood over the stove to keep
the kitchen odorless and
cleaner. There is a built-in
dishwasher-what more
could you ask?
Come to think of it - with
everything under finger tip
control in the house, maybe
it is best to have to really
exercise while doing the
outside work. The Egyptian
onions are ready to pull and
eat; last year’s parsley,
which I covered,is beautiful
and tall; and some parsnips
are ready to be dug.
It is in the Spring, Summer
and Fall that I really ap
preciate the conveniences,
because then I am so busy
outside the house.
